Three Reasons Why Left 4 Dead 2's Boycott is Stupid
Posted on Sunday, August 9 2009 @ 22:57:08 Eastern

Hello Everyone,

Diesel here.  One thing I wanted to type about is the sudden urge or want to Boycott the upcoming title Left 4 Dead 2.  This is just a stupid concept to boycott a game and I don't see the problem with Valve coming out with another game on such short notice.  The reason I find this stupid is because of the straight fact that how is a sequel a bad thing for such an original and fun IP?  Just shocks me really.

It's so stupid, "Oh: lets boycott this hard-worked on game because we didn't get some DLC waah~"  Games come out with sequels all the time and sometimes DLC just doesn't get made, but if $60 is too much for 5 new campaigns, new weapons, storyline, etc.  Then what would be the proper price for you?  Game Companies have to make money somehow, and everyone who is boycotting L4D2 is doing so for one or all of three things:
  1. They don't want to fork over the price of the game.
  2. They feel cheated about the DLC they haven't gotten yet.
  3. They feel like being cheap-asses with the excuse of "we're in a recession".
Ladies.  Lemme go through these one by one and give my thoughts on how y'all are wasting your time and making sure you guys and gals will always have a "I'm Stupid" stamp on your forehead for this.

  • "They don't want to fork over the price of the game."
And who does?  Some people would like to go and wait for the game to be $20 and then pick it up because it's more convenient.  Plus one thing I have noticed is that if this happened to any other game, I don't believe it would cause such a s***storm as it has for L4D2.  Why?  Because this is the first time I believe in Valve's lifetime that they've come out with a game within half a decade of each other.  What, since it comes out next year it's tainted to the eyes now?  Really?  If Gears of War 2 didn't come out with DLC and pumped out GoW3 next year: who would really be pissed about it?  I'm sure all of you bought L4D for the $60 price tag, I know I did, and loved it, I know I did.  So why be in such a maniac state for more good gameplay to be coming our way?  I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather it come out now than in 2014.

  • "They feel cheated about the DLC they haven't gotten yet."
So yes, L4D "fans" were only given the Survival Pack which came with a new mode and the availability of Versus on all maps.  With the way Microsoft is, you'd figure this would be 800MSP right?  No, we all got it for FREE.  This is unheard of for 360 owners!  And y'all are still complaining?  If you got L4D for the 360, you can't complain because of the DLC you've gotten: you've paid nothing for it!  Every DLC has a price tag on it and L4D was the one of few games to be given the opportunity for free DLC, and y'all are being very ungrateful about it.  We all should have $10 less in our pockets for the Survival Pack if you think about it.  Plus, even with Left 4 Dead 2 announced: More DLC is on the Way.  You'll get your DLC, and the game can still come out: it's not rocket science.

  • "They feel like being cheap-asses with the excuse of 'we're in a recession'."
Then don't buy the game.  It's as simple as that.  These games take time and a lot of money to make, companies have salaries, technology, licensing, and much much more to worry about: and it all costs money.  It's not like Valve has it out for you ladies and gentlemen: it's a marketing decision.  They have a bunch of new content and figured, "Why not make this a full fledged game instead of slowly creeping it out via DLC?"  And I fully agree with them.  All of Left 4 Dead 2 has not been fully announced yet, and we're already judging the game like it just came out and we've all had a good amount of time to play it.  It doesn't come out for another 3 months!  Boycott it if you want, but it's not going to stop Valve from shipping out Left 4 Dead 2 and it becoming another smash hit on the market.

What really ticks me off is this:

This s*** is stupid.  Very, very stupid.  It makes Valve's community look stupid and makes gamers look stupid.  Valve works its ass off to make us a brand new game and over 50,000 people boycott it complaining about unrecieved DLC, but forgetting the fact that a fresh new game is staring them in the face.  We want to pay for chunks of a game over time, but not for an entire game now.  That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.  You want DLC to flow like Rock Band and it doesn't work that way.  Take this game: play it, enjoy it, put some Serious time into it, and if it doesn't suit you, sell the game and continue on with your life.  But don't call yourself a Gamer if you're going to Boycott new material: BUT YOU WANT NEW MATERIAL.

Stay Classy,
Diesel

I totally agree with you but i expected that you showed them how each of their points was ridiculous. I kinda hated how you just summed it up in 3 points you've just made it up and bashed them (but i can easily summed up to this). And I've never heard the boycott was about the recession. Where did you hear that from? Here listen to some of their "official motives": - The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far - L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic - The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome Sheesh... because of the music and how the characters looks like? Come on! You could of say something about that! Though they have some good points that i kinda agree, they're still a bunch of winners and should just let sleeping dogs lie and LET US PLAY THE DARN GAME! They're making actual consumers unions look bad! Still, 5 stars! i love me some ranting!

I get you Lien, but even the three points you brought up are still not good enough for a petition to be upheld [like you said]. The recession bit was in part to the fact of everyone rather paying for DLC over time than fork over $60 now, which is what most people want who are into this boycott. So putting into figures, since they'd rather pay $10 than $60: to me it makes sense. Thanks for the ratings everyone. =)

I think Valve could have eased the blow if they gave a small discount to everyone who owns L4D when buying L4D2, but yeah, the boycott is just a fanboy knee jerk reaction.

Here's how I look at it (which doesn't mean I'm looking at it correctly, but I'll say it anyway): Why pay full price for what is essentially going to be the same experience? New weapons? A couple new infected types? Some new levels? It doesn't matter, it all still works almost the exact same way. Thanks to that, consumers will tire of L4D2 in about half the time it took for L4D1 to get old. More development time from Valve could've produced a title with more quality and variety.

It will probably be delayed anyway. And besides, I thought people were used to buying sequels with little changes anyway.

Let's not forget reason 4: "we [the gamers] are afraid that Valve and Steam will stop supporting L4D and won't be able to play online unless it's with a LAN connection." I hate this reason too since its obvious that they won't - it's only been one year and both companies are still supporting games like TF2 and CS, and they've been out for way longer. Besides, if valve was really smart, they might just have some kind of specific references to the first game's characters.

Publishers distribute games and Developers create them. They are generally two entirely different companies. Publishers dictate dates and the Developer abides. Aside from that L4D had as much content as an Arcade Game on Xbox Live, but it was at full retail price. The content that they are giving the game is not helping. The fact that they want to release another game at full price outrages people because most people abandon previous games for sequels, thus giving the developers less a reason to generate new content for the previous. They explicitly promised more content than they've given and thus nerds who pay attention are outraged and spreading the world. Besides this all? The typical consumer would see no distinctions between the two games and would probably be less incline to buying it because of the emptyness of its predecessors in conjunction with price. /thread

Rani: That is true, but they've come and talked on GameTrailers and also reiterated about how DLC will be made. Hopefully people will understand their words with the New DLC coming to L4D in September. I would love to see more DLC for L4D: more DLC is never bad at all! I just don't see what looks like an overcompensated outrage to the point everyone needs to have a pointless boycott/petition that really won't do anything. I understand how people can be upset that L4D doesn't have a lot of DLC available at the time, but it's how everyone's handling it that makes me look at them stupid.

Pretty much hit the nail on all the points I would of made. I am concerned, like always, about the sequel, but it seems like they are perfecting it more than detracting from it, which is a great thing. So I don't get why people are worried so much.

@Links: Yeah, I can't see them making the game worse. I'm interested to see the new A.I. Director work and all the new content put in. @Undead: Thanks buddy. =]

I think L4D was a bigger hit than they expected. Therefore they are working on it more than they were supposed to and we get a sequel instead of them depending on DLC. The user created levels for L4D have been great if you play on the PC. You might feel a little screwed if you're a 360 player but that;s to be expected. This game has better PC support like Valve games do. There's a freakin' Zelda campaign with a mechanical dragon boss,
