Movies based on video games.
Posted on Monday, March 9 2009 @ 15:23:57 Eastern

So we saw movies that are based upon a video game. Some of the video games are quite remarkable and thus they have entered the minds of film makers alike. So how many movies are the fellow movie industry going to create?

Thanks to fellow GR member letusprey, we have a list of 28 movies that are going or already made based upon a video game title from this site

http://www.examiner.com/x-578-Video-Game-Examiner~y2008m12d17-28-video-games-being-made-into-movies-will-they-suck

I viewed the list and I chose the top five that i predict will be a success! Lets begin.

#5: The Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

This movie is already made, i'm actually waiting to see this movie. From the great trailers that have been shown it looks action packed. How do i feel about Street Fighter in a movie? Well at first i wasn't to prevailed for the film. I didn't believe Street Fighter had enough storylines to maintain a film base. But i guess you can't judge a game's storyline by it's color. With Kristen Kreuk as Chun Li, they might pull it off.

#4: Halo

Ok i'm going to have to agree with the comment on the site. This game i don't think there's enough work involved. It keeps giving Halo fans and gamers alike the hope of this ever being made...but wait for it....BOOM! the project was on hold, then its not, then it is and so on. The Halo Trilogy was a pretty good for a story line (if you actually understand what they're saying) but their story line is rather short. So who knows, i can't actually confirm the film is being made or not (Due to the fact the news is always changing) But what i do know is if it's being made, the little teaser clips that they've showed must be more creative and influent. The clips have not given me that much interest.

#3: Mortal Kombat:

What say you Scorpion? ready for a frozen movie Sub-Zero? Miss your brother the Lui Kang? The Mortal Kombat movie i'm thrilled to see. The last two movies that were made were pretty decent. It was action packed and led me to want to see another film of Mortal Kombat. With asking for  more characters that were not shown in the previvious films and more of a storyline between each realm will fascinate me to see this movie if made.

#2 Metal Gear Solid

Snake.....SNNNNAAAKKKKKKEEEE! Yes if we're going to have this film we better not see that come up.  My prediction for this film makes it like something is going to explode your mind. In the game itself, you have a great storyline structures and many twisters upon each part of the Metal Gear Series. Ever Since Metal Gear came out on the Nintendo NES the storyline structure should help with the film dramatically. Speaking of storyline, The creator of Metal Gear Solid Hideo Kojima will be writing, so we should look to see a great film....hopefully

#1 Gears of War

Oh But Mr.Ughrochester why did you choose Gears of War as your # 1 pick? Does it have anything to you being a fan of Gears of War? As matter of fact...no it doesn't. Yes i am a fan but i chose this to be number one due to the fact that my man Len Wiseman who directed the action packed and suspense film known as "Live Free or Die Hard" will be directing the film. Not only that we have a great writer Chris Morgan who wrote for "X-men: The Last Stand" will make this film fantastic. Sure i will be like the Lord of The Rings Trilogy, but i'm predicting this film is going to shove our face completely. This is why i chose Gears of War as number one!

I am hoping that they are all put on hold and that we won't have to see our favorite video-games get turned into god-awful movies. Do these people have enough money to make the visuals look 3d-like? No. If I wanted to see a videogame-adaptation, I would want to see something along the lines of 300. I would want something that feels like a game. Gears of war has no resemblance whatsoever to Lotr. If any of these films come out, I am just going to have to expect them all to be miserable.

As long as Uwe Boll isn't involved in the film making process in any way, it stands some chance of being a decent movie, maybe even great. The problem is too many movies go way off the source material and piss off fans of the game. I wish the game license-holders would just release their own movies based on their game. If Blizzard were to make an awesome CG movie based in the Warcraft universe, I think it would not only sell a ton of copies and tickets, but also boost sales of WoW. A movie I'd like to see, based off a game: Warhammer. If the guys from the different game development companies were to make a CG movie written by Games Workshop, it would blow our freaking minds.

There's just no ****ing way a movie based on a game can be good. Let's be serious, most games don't have a storyline that's deep enough to make a coherent 2 hours movie. The way you perceive a game is completely different from the way a movie is perceived. Halo and Gears of War would make for flashy actiony films of alien killing; we've already seen that (Doom) and it didn't turn out too well. We've also seen Street Fighter's attempt, and I doubt any comment should be made about them. About Metal Gear, take away the gameplay, and you have a 3 hours cutscene by Kojima with his ridiculous plot twists; will the story look so good once its made a movie?

Basically it's the director and the film its producing. For Ex, Doom was a good game, but didn't really exceed a great story line. But somehow, someone imagined a great film from the FPS game. Althought it was a good game, it was a terrible movie. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, now that was a great game, and was a decent movie. Same with Max Payne. Those following films i feel will be pretty good if the director and right story line will fit for that film

I'm not gonna get drawn into a discussion about Tomb Raider; it will suffice to say that I don't think its such a good game. About Max Payne, that game was absolutely mind blowing at its time, because of the stuff it introduced into gaming; and because the experience of watching a movie is not even nearly as intense as playing a game (a good game, that is), well its just not the same thing. Plus, most directors are ignorant of what the game was, unnecessarily changing the story, main characters, overall setting, and I get the feeling that kind of happened with Max Payne.

Ugh.this got chosen as vox pop.nVideo game movies are awful and until I see one that somehow proves that there is a point to making them, I will stand by this opinion. Silent Hill was by far the best video game movie I've ever seen and it was still a convoluted mess of a movie that I would not dare reccomend to someone that isn't already well aquinted with the series and even then they will see it as a thin shell of it's game self. If you're looking forward to any video game moves then you're either senslessly optimistc or you have terrible taste and given by the fact you seem to say that the 2nd Mortal Kombat movie was good makes me lean torwards the latter

Well hello there, thanks for your belated post 6 months in the future. I mean at the point in time when I posted this, The Halo film was still in production, but there wasn't any motives. Now, during the month of August I believe (maybe later) Peter Jackson officially announced he was no longer involve in make the Halo film.
