Penny Arcade Expo is descending upon Melbourne for the first time and with new consoles from Microsoft and Sony on the horizon excitement is at rare earth element melting point. But it’s not all just about the next big black box to find a spare HDMI port for.
The success of previous PAX expos in Seattle and Boston since 2004 shows that celebrating the community and culture of gaming IRL is something gamers seem pretty keen to be part of. For many attendees it is the main draw just to get amongst the atmosphere of being with your tribe.
Melbourne already has a strong, accessible gaming community with cultural events across town happening within the hallowed Minotaur, Dungeon Crawl, JB, EB’s, the dodgy Russel St. arcades, the arcade tables at Ding Dong, Mana Bar, and ACMI’s recent gaming exhibitions. All telling signs of a place electronic games feel at home and obviously a huge factor in the organisers decision to choose old “liveable” Melbourne.
The importance of the PAX to Melbourne’s gamers of all enthusiasm levels is totally that it’s just for us. It’s not a product launch, a trade show, a force feeding of electronic entertainment propaganda; the focus is on the passion and insight of the people in and out of the industry, the people who value the craft more than the business model.
Panels of discussion from local and international developers in a public forum I think will open a dialogue between people in and out of the industry that can only benefit our creative juices as a game developing and playing nation. Getting the insider scoop firsthand of some minute detail that lets us in on the process can only benefit our experiences as gamers at home and I'm sure a local developer wouldn't mind the confidence boost of rockstar status for the weekend. Everybody wins!
