In 1942, flying over the island of Guadalcanal, the crew of a B17 reported the Japanese were constructing an airstrip to block the Allied path to Tokyo. The 1st Marine Division attacked and routed the resistance at the airfield - then awaited the supplies and reinforcements needed to capture the entire island. They never arrived.
