StarCraft served an important role during the 90's. Although many most remember it for its online multiplayer and integration of Battle.net, its character and personality deserve just as much respect. This was a game that featured several of gaming's most iconic units, most of which would return in its sequel more than a decade later.
It's been 19 years since StarCraft was birthed, and we can't help but remember all its interesting units and the things they say. Below we're going to go over the 10 we most remember, and highlight their best quotes.
1. Archon (Protoss)
Trained Quote: "The merging is complete."
Selected Quote: "Power overwhelming!"
Order Quote: "Destroy..."
Random Fact: During the StarCraft Alpha, an Archon required three High Templar to fuse.
Fused by combining two High Templar, the Archon was a terrifying unit. Floating around like a plume of smog it exploded everything in its path while talking about how overwhelmed it was with power. A muscle relaxant probably would have been the best prescription, but back then scientists thought it'd be a better idea to just send dozens of Zerglings its way. Spoiler: it didn't work.
2. Battlecruiser (Terran)
Trained Quote: "Battlecruiser operational."
Selected Quote: "Receiving transmission."
Order Quote: "Set a course."
Random Fact: The Battlecruiser was voiced by Chris Metzen, who recently retired from Blizzard.
Apparently Russians are still alive and well in the distant future when humanity has colonized a large portion of the Milky Way galaxy. The only potential negative is they all apparently pilot heavy command ships. The Battlecruiser needed a stern voice presence to match its 560 meters of length, the largest in the game, and Russian dialect fit the bill. It fit perfectly, and made those moments when you finally progress far enough into the technology tree to hear the words "Battlecruiser operational" so much better.
3. Dragoon (Protoss)
Trained Quote: "I have returned."
Selected Quote: "Awaiting instructions."
Order Quote: "Commencing."
Random Fact: In StarCraft lore, Dragoons were piloted by Templars wounded in battle.
Can you ever imagine a Dragoon laughing? Neither can we. This unit was very serious about its commitment to battle, and responded to commands in a professional fashion. Walking around like a spider it was a feared unit in battle,
4. Goliath (Terran)
Trained Quote: "Goliath online."
Selected Quote: "Go ahead, TACCOM."
Order Quote: "Acknowledged H.Q."
Random Fact: Several quotes are inspired by ED 209 in Robocop.
The Goliath was like a Counter-Strike player who took the game too seriously. Speaking perfect phonetics, it knew exactly how to communicate effectively over radio. For H.Q. operators this was welcomed. For players, it was a reason to repeat unit quotes at school.
5. Infested Terran (Zerg)
Trained Quote: "Live for the Swarm!"
Selected Quote: "Sacrifice me..."
Order Quote: "Gladly..."
Random Fact: Infested Terran were afflicted with what's been called the hyper-evolutionary virus.
The Infested Terran was the only playable Zerg unit that had human language in its unit quote. Because of this, it's the only Zerg unit featured on this list. This unit was an interesting one, as it would suicide in an attempt to blow up nearby enemies. It was considered very difficult to use effectively, and often times forgotten by even the best players of the era.
6. Marine (Terran)
Trained Quote: "You wanna piece of me, boy?"
Selected Quote: "Jacked up and good to go."
Order Quote: "Rock & roll!"
Random Fact: The Marine was equipped with a C-14 Impaler gauss rifle, which used "ferromagnetic projectiles hurled at hypersonic speed using magnetic induction".
The Marine was the most versatile of the starter units across all three races, providing both land and air potential at low cost. Due to this, it was commonly upgraded over the length of a game and served as a backbone of most Terran armies even into late-game. With that in mind, it's no wonder that Terran players heard Marine quotes thousands of times over the course of their career. "Rock & roll!".
7. SCV (Terran)
Trained Quote: "SCV good to go, sir."
Selected Quote: "Orders, Cap'n?"
Order Quote: "Orders received."
Random Fact: In StarCraft lore, SCVs were given reinforced plating until the Terran cut back on "unnecessary expenses".
The SCV sounded like it had no business stepping foot on a battlefield in StarCraft. While every other unit was busy tearing one another apart, this bipedal vehicle housed an engineer who just wanted to mine for some ore. They were commonly harassed by Zerglings, and their innocence made such occasions a sad sight to see for spectators. They really should have considered concealed carry.
8. Siege Tank (Terran)
Trained Quote: "Ready to roll out!"
Selected Quote: "I-dentify target!"
Order Quote: "De-lighted to, SIR!"
Random Fact: A Dropship was capable of carrying 2 Siege Tanks, or 8 Marines.
The Siege Tank's enthusiasm brought light-heartedness to a battlefield where things weren't so pretty. They loved their coffee, and emphasized syllables for no known reason. Bearing a reputation for destroying those who didn't know how to counter them, they were responsible for the death of millions of noobs worldwide.
9. Zealot (Protoss)
Trained Quote: "For Aiur!"
Selected Quote: "Gee'hous!"
Order Quote: "Honor guide me."
Random Fact: Zealot psi-blades are capable of cutting through all materials in the known universe, even chicken taco shells.
The Zealot was the core combat unit of the Protoss army, resulting in its quotes being long remembered. Dedicated to serving Aiur, it sounded like it had a frog in its throat, which was strangely charming. Maybe they liked gargling water? The world will never know, but you certainly don't want to end up on the bad side of one of these alien warriors.
10. Other (All Races)
Quote: "Nuclear launch detected."
Nothing got your heart rate rushing more than hearing the announcement of an imminent nuclear blast, whether you were the one being targeted or the one doing the delivery. Executed by a Terran covert operative called the Ghost, these were seldom seen in normal play due to the incredible technological investment required. But when one went off, both sides couldn't help but stare in awe only to find themselves blinded by the radiation a few weeks later.
Blizzard has announced a StarCraft: Remastered, which is slated for a Summer 2017 debut. The package will include the gameplay and audio from the original game, with a few neat perks to bring the game up to modern times.
Happy 19th anniversary, StarCraft!
