E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Best of E3 Award Winners

Posted on Friday, June 17 @ 13:00:00 Eastern by

Each year, GameRevolution sets out on a perilous quest filled with smelly nerds and temptress booth babes on a shark-infested E3 show floor, in order to bring our readers an unbiased, in-depth look at the hottest upcoming games across all major platforms. It’s our privilege and duty to inform the masses as to where they should spend their time and hard-earned money. We take that job very seriously, and have faced the seemingly impossible task of narrowing down the hundreds of titles on display at E3 2011 to the ten stand-out titles, which represent the very best of the best, the must-have, most-anticipated titles releasing over the course of the next couple years.

Read on in great faith that GameRevolution hath selected only the creamiest of the crop. I hereby bestow upon thee (in no particular order) our winners of our Best of E3 2011 Awards.

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment of America
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 11/01/11

Excerpt: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception has a Herculean task at hand: Top its Game of the Year-winning predecessor, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. And it has to do it in all aspects of the game. From what we’ve experienced so far, it’s almost made a mockery of all other franchises and their natural progression from installment to installment. Believe it or not, this Uncharted is leaps and bounds better than the last.

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Release Date: TBA 2012

Excerpt: The game looks simply gorgeous, and so does Lara. I can't stress that enough—she's simply stunning. But it's because she seems more human than video game character. Cave and jungle environments are realistic, rivaling—and possibly beating—any other game on any console. But it’s the facial animations that really shine, especially the appearance of fear and pain written all over her face.

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Bioware
Release Date: 03/06/12

Excerpt: The Reapers are coming, their ships like black hands clawing at the remains of the universe. Your warnings have fallen on the deaf ears of the Citadel, who only now realize the need for all races to unite or fall as yet another failed attempt of evolution. But not even the combined strength of human, turian, salarian, and asari is enough. Only Shepard, true to his name, can bring the other races together to fight against their collective fate. That is his destiny, lest all be lost to the darkness beyond space itself.

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Release Date: 11/11/11

Excerpt: Much of Skyrim is still under wraps – crafting systems, guilds, quest management, lockpicking, speech, character generation. I did see horses as a mount and a 3D map that can be accessed simply by zooming out at any time, though the full features of the mount and the map have been left unrevealed. But if what I saw is any indication, I have nothing to worry about.

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Digital Illusions CE (DICE)
Release Date: 10/25/11

Excerpt: It's more than evident that Battlefield 3 is aiming to be a top contender in the FPS genre through improvements, variety, balancing, while offering a game that appeals to both console and PC players and every playstyle in between, for the lone wolf or the team player. Come this fall, we’ll finally be able to see if DICE has succeeded in delivering what they've been promising. So far, it looks like they are well on their way.

Great point, but that's really the developer's fault. We had this dicussion while we were all at E3, it's disappointing to see that fewer and fewer original IPs are debuted each year.

If you really want something original, check out Sound Shapes for the PlayStation Vita. Now that was amazing. Unforunately, we didn't really see enough of it for it to make the list, but that's one of the most original new IPs I've seen in a long time.

I wasn't holding it against you. It's just the state of the industry. Most of these games I will buy, play, and probably love. I just wish there was room for some creativity and risk in the market, instead of supersized versions of the games that were profitable last year.

BF3 looks and sounds like it will be worth the wait. Sorry COD but your time is short. I never understood the popularity of you anyways. Good campaigns but monotonous multiplayer.

Wow... the top 10 must have, best of the best, cream of the crop games... and I am not in the least bit interested in any of em. If this stupid f*cking trend of naught but sequels continues, I can see my gaming nerd days coming to an end fairly soon. Well, at least in regards to new sh*t...

CoD is fun for about 6 minutes, then... not so much. I was interested in all of these games at some point, dont get me wrong. I loved Bioshock, I have both Saints Row games, I own Uncharted 2, played the **** out of Assasins Creed 2, played Arkham Asylum, played Tomb Raider, the only ones I havent really played are Mass Effect (no XBox), Battlefield, and Elder Scrolls. My issue is not in the quality of these games. My issue is that there is nothing f*cking different from year to year anymore. Everything is just bloody sequels, prequels, HD remakes, new games of an old liscence (star Trek, Star Wars, etc.). Its f*cking BORING. The games that have earned my obsession over the last couple years have been stuff like Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2 (I know its a sequel), Little Big Planet, to name a few. I realise that these are all game types that have been made before, there was something totally unique about each one of em. Assasins Creed 13, Bioshock 7, f*cking Tomb Raider 11 and a half... there is no thought anymore. Games these days are like movies, the same thing rehashed over and over and over cause it makes money, not cause people give it props for being a good idea. When I was a kid starting out with gaming, I was awed by it because of the creative posibilities behind it. You could think of anything, any world, any creature, any story, any gameplay element and bring it to life (figuratively speaking, of course). Now its just... well, its kind of pathetic when you think of what COULD be done with the existing systems. Now, we're being told that the next gen systems will be 10 times as powerful, and you know it just means more lifelike CoD, another GTA, more f*cking Street Fighter... Its a simple case of easy money. Read the article posted the other day from the Cracked writer, he makes some very good points about the future of gaming. I, for one, can see a limited future in it for myself if things keep stay on this track.

There were some other cool original IPs too, even if they didn't make the list. Asura's Wrath looked epic, Never Dead was surprisingly fun, RAGE was awesome (really can't wait for that)... Anarchy Reigns seemed like it might be fun, given some polish... And while I didn't get a look at it, Insomniac announced their new multiplatform game, Overstrike. Inversion was kinda nifty, offering a new dynamic for third person shooters. El Shaddai was there, it didn't get announced at the show, but it's definitely something different. Dragon's Dogma is new too... not quite sure what to make of it yet, but definitely interesting. They're out there, it's just they don't get as much hype, because a lot have yet to be established as quality games. Sequels get that advantage.

I find a lot of the new IPs are coming in as digital downloads too, like Puddle, Eufloria, Papo y Yo, PixelJunk SideScroller, PixelJunk LifeLike (same PJ name, but totally different things), Hg, and the motion based titles.

I've never really played much Battlefield, but I picked up Battlefield 2 about a year after it dropped and had some fun with it. Battlefield 3 is looking to be pretty spectacular though; I may actually pick it up.
