<< GameRevolution Best of E3 2011 Awards continued from page 1.

Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Irrational Games
Release Date: TBA 2012

Excerpt: Infinite's sky world looks beautiful, but perhaps more importantly, you can actually see all of it thanks to natural lighting. The fact that Columbia sits above the clouds in a blue sky means that all the hard work and detail poured into the game's environment will be appreciated that much more. Vibrant colors splash across every object and character. Imbued with patriotism, Columbia flies the ol' Red, White, and Blue quite a bit, but the spectrum of color doesn't stop there.

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Release Date: 10/18/11

Excerpt: Rocksteady's been planning Arkham City for a long time. If it plays as well as it did at E3 and keeps the surprises coming, Arkham City will be well on its way to being a Game of the Year contender. With every demo of the game having character dialogue and every piece of gameplay looking better than the last, be ready for October 18th.

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Eidos Montreal
Release Date: 08/23/11

Excerpt: While our time with Deus Ex at E3 was brief, every demo reassures us that the game is looking stellar and is using the extra time in the oven to hammer out glitches and making last minute tweaks to combat, stealth, and RPG systems. Deus Ex: Human Revolution launches on August 23rd, 2011.

Publisher: THQ
Developer: Volition, Inc.
Release Date: 11/15/11

Excerpt: Just when you think Saints Row couldn't be more crass and over the top, Saints Row: The Third blows... if you don't know why I'm letting this sentence dangle, here's a dead hooker. Some people say that the series is just a rip-off of Grand Theft Auto, but that's the fucking point. In fact, it's really the bold-faced truth. Don't lie and say that you play GTA for the heartwarming story when you spend half the time shooting cops and ignoring phone calls from your cousin and girlfriend. Saints Row: The Third knows what you really want: To Kick Them All In The Nuts.

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Release Date: 11/15/11

Excerpt: What do you think about yearly releases? A business model that flogs a franchise on a yearly basis can really hurt developers, fans, and Guitar Heroes. While I'd normal be the first to reprimand Ubisoft for taking such measures with their excellent Assassin's Creed series, each entry in the franchise gets better. If you can give me more, I'll take more.

Great point, but that's really the developer's fault. We had this dicussion while we were all at E3, it's disappointing to see that fewer and fewer original IPs are debuted each year.

If you really want something original, check out Sound Shapes for the PlayStation Vita. Now that was amazing. Unforunately, we didn't really see enough of it for it to make the list, but that's one of the most original new IPs I've seen in a long time.

I wasn't holding it against you. It's just the state of the industry. Most of these games I will buy, play, and probably love. I just wish there was room for some creativity and risk in the market, instead of supersized versions of the games that were profitable last year.

BF3 looks and sounds like it will be worth the wait. Sorry COD but your time is short. I never understood the popularity of you anyways. Good campaigns but monotonous multiplayer.

Wow... the top 10 must have, best of the best, cream of the crop games... and I am not in the least bit interested in any of em. If this stupid f*cking trend of naught but sequels continues, I can see my gaming nerd days coming to an end fairly soon. Well, at least in regards to new sh*t...

CoD is fun for about 6 minutes, then... not so much. I was interested in all of these games at some point, dont get me wrong. I loved Bioshock, I have both Saints Row games, I own Uncharted 2, played the **** out of Assasins Creed 2, played Arkham Asylum, played Tomb Raider, the only ones I havent really played are Mass Effect (no XBox), Battlefield, and Elder Scrolls. My issue is not in the quality of these games. My issue is that there is nothing f*cking different from year to year anymore. Everything is just bloody sequels, prequels, HD remakes, new games of an old liscence (star Trek, Star Wars, etc.). Its f*cking BORING. The games that have earned my obsession over the last couple years have been stuff like Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2 (I know its a sequel), Little Big Planet, to name a few. I realise that these are all game types that have been made before, there was something totally unique about each one of em. Assasins Creed 13, Bioshock 7, f*cking Tomb Raider 11 and a half... there is no thought anymore. Games these days are like movies, the same thing rehashed over and over and over cause it makes money, not cause people give it props for being a good idea. When I was a kid starting out with gaming, I was awed by it because of the creative posibilities behind it. You could think of anything, any world, any creature, any story, any gameplay element and bring it to life (figuratively speaking, of course). Now its just... well, its kind of pathetic when you think of what COULD be done with the existing systems. Now, we're being told that the next gen systems will be 10 times as powerful, and you know it just means more lifelike CoD, another GTA, more f*cking Street Fighter... Its a simple case of easy money. Read the article posted the other day from the Cracked writer, he makes some very good points about the future of gaming. I, for one, can see a limited future in it for myself if things keep stay on this track.

There were some other cool original IPs too, even if they didn't make the list. Asura's Wrath looked epic, Never Dead was surprisingly fun, RAGE was awesome (really can't wait for that)... Anarchy Reigns seemed like it might be fun, given some polish... And while I didn't get a look at it, Insomniac announced their new multiplatform game, Overstrike. Inversion was kinda nifty, offering a new dynamic for third person shooters. El Shaddai was there, it didn't get announced at the show, but it's definitely something different. Dragon's Dogma is new too... not quite sure what to make of it yet, but definitely interesting. They're out there, it's just they don't get as much hype, because a lot have yet to be established as quality games. Sequels get that advantage.

I find a lot of the new IPs are coming in as digital downloads too, like Puddle, Eufloria, Papo y Yo, PixelJunk SideScroller, PixelJunk LifeLike (same PJ name, but totally different things), Hg, and the motion based titles.

I've never really played much Battlefield, but I picked up Battlefield 2 about a year after it dropped and had some fun with it. Battlefield 3 is looking to be pretty spectacular though; I may actually pick it up.
