E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling
Posted on 06/15/13
E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

GameRevolution Goes Gay For GaymerX, The First LGBT Gaming Convention [Update: Full Interview Posted]

Posted on Monday, January 21 @ 14:25:00 Eastern by

Update: The full 43-minute interview is now live! You can view it on our YouTube channel here. In this full-length video, Matt Conn responds to the exclusionary aspect of the convention and why it's still worth creating.

You may not know this, but Game Revolution is one of safest places for the LGBT community. I'm gay, Jessica Vazquez is gay, Kevin Schaller is gay, weeeeeeeee!!! But don't worry, guys and gals, we love our straight comrades too... not in that way... maybe...

Anyway, we believe that everyone deserves to game and we wholeheartedly support GaymerX, the newest gaming convention debuting this year after raising over $90,000 on Kickstarter despite only having a goal of $25,000 and despite facing opposition from the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.

Now supported by Xbox Live, Electronic Arts, and Ellen McLain (the voice actor for GLaDOS in the Portal series), GaymerX is the first LGBT gaming convention of its kind. Previously known as GaymerCon but changed due to legal reasons, it will take place this year on August 3 and 4 in Japantown, San Francisco. If you're interested in attending, please register on GaymerConnect. (I'm a Lvl 8 Turian.)

For more detail, I interviewed Matt Conn (with Jessica Vazquez interviewing Kayce Brown), one of the co-founders of GaymerX, on how and why the convention was created, how to score a GaymerX badge, and some of his thoughts on homophobia and the portrayal of LGBT characters in the video game industry and community. The video embedded above is a shorter 15-minute reel of highlights, with the full 60-minute interview coming soon in an update to this article.

Thanks to our cameraman Thiago Dsouza as well as Hi Tops, the first gay sports bar in The Castro, for letting Game Revolution hold the interview in their space. Try their grilled cheese with figs and ahi tuna burger! And of course, their beer! Without it, there would no way we would get these outtakes...

I know it's trendy to be gay and all but this is going to far. Why do we have a separate gay version of everything? Gay people want to be included with everything yet they continue to single themselves out like this. Makes no sense.

And I just watched the interview after I posted and sliverstorm is right, they explain 100% why there are gay versions of things. Also it's not trendy to be gay, it's becoming more "acceptable" to be gay so more people are coming out, step outside yourself sometime and avoid a douchy post

Slowly progressing society, is becoming more accepted by the mainstream, it's still not considered as normal as it should be, so like many minorities its good to create events and places where people can be comfortable being who they really are and a place where people can support each other and find common ground in a society that unfortunately is still unacceptably not fully open to homosexuality. I hope that made sense, sorry for the split post too, I'm ****ing wasted

Trendy? As a gay woman I'd appreciate it if my sexuality wasn't likened to a college co-eds decision on what dress she's wearing on a night out on the town. You may be seeing more openly LGBT people and events out there but it's not because it's a "trend" it's because more LGBT people feel safe being who they are publicly in this country. As Chunibrow and silverstorm already pointed out, Kayce and Matt talk very candidly about how they don't want to exclude people from this convention. They are marketing it to LGBT people but they aren't saying that heterosexual people can't go. They want to create an environment of inclusiveness, which is something many people from the LGBT community have yet to experience in certain parts of the U.S. especially if they are transgender. But if you still don't get it, you can check out the link below, The Escapist did a great piece on this topic.

I have to agree as I'm tired of everyone that *****es for equality but still runs their own 'separate' events. I'm all for it but is there a need to throw out LGBT for everything nowadays, why not just have a game event that welcomes the LGBT community as well as us 'normal' gamers. I'll watch the interview when I get home but I'm one of those people that could care less what anyone wants to do or who with or why it's a big deal now with gaming.

I'm still blown away by the new Bioware gay planet fiasco...

GaymerX has no problem with having straight people attend too. Many of the panels and events are gay-oriented but just as many are rather universal topics.

Problem is you'll have many straight people that won't attend because someone might think they're gay because they attended. If it were advertised as a "normal" convention that welcomes gay people you could avoid that dilemma. Does that make any sense?

I agree with Ananymous. In principle this is no different then how it was back in the 60's with black people, where they had to go to separate bathrooms or ride in a different section of the bus. By doing a convention for gay people aren't they kind of segregating themselves?

It's a little different since this is self-exclusion rather than separate but equal under the law. But I guess my answer is that we already have "a normal convention that LGBT attend" and it's called PAX. It's a great place where gamers of all kinds can mingle freely, and at GDC everyone is merely an industry professional. But there are LGBT issues that aren't discussed and there's always a level of discomfort for LGBT people when we have to fit into the heteronormal space. And then there are LGBT gaymers who feel even more excluded because video games tend to be associated with that heteronormal space. I see GaymerX as a two-day vacation where gaymers feel free and open with who they are, especially those who are not completely out and live in the part of the country where they are discriminated against.

It's painfully obvious this comment came from a white, heterosexual (probably male as well) person who has no gay friends. Someone who has never experienced a life outside his comfortable, privaleged position at the top of the social hierarchy. "Why can't these peope just go to normal events like the rest of us?" These folks want to go to a place where they can enjoy things they like, with other people just like them. Ya know, kinda like how there is a gaming conference for people who like games? It's exactly the same thing. It's not an event only for gays, its a conference that centers around gay subjects. Here is a great lesson about human psychology, we enjoy learning about, and hanging around people similar to us.

Why the thumbs down, this post is exactly right. People just can't put themselves in other people's shoes, and it is usually the people who have never faced adversity themselves who suffer from this self centred attitude the most.

Incredibly cool, and a fantastic interview to boot (minus the ambient noise). Matt's argument for discriminatory speech creating a lesser culture by the exclusion of would-be members resonated with me in a way that most arguments on the topic do not. He came off so sincere and matter-of-fact without any accusatory tone whatsoever.

Looking forward to the full interview.

I would love to see a reboot of Legends of the Hidden Temple... if Kurt Fog isn't up for the reboot, I'll host it myself.

Actually on-topic though, I've very much looking forward to this con. I was able a few months back to fleetingly meet the group of organizers, and they're really nice fellas with their hearts in the right place, so I'm interested to see just how well things go. As for the Westboro Baptist Church, I admit I want to see them there. That'll mean it's more likely to be a success, and there might be another one in a year or two.

I'm all for gay rights for a number of reasons, mostly being that whole civil rights, equality, thing that people are supposed to have in this country. But another reason that I'm extremely supportive of gays is that because I hate with a passion their biggest aggressor, religious nuts. With a leader that spent his entire life preaching loving everybody no matter what, god is the only one with the power to judge people, give to the poor, peace, etc. it is shocking how many religious nuts are intolerant, racist, greedy, bigoted pigs. I'm not saying all religious people are this way, but the ones who actively attack/take away gay rights are usually this type.

I fondly remember my grandma watching soap operas when I was like 5 and she was babysitting me.
Any time the white woman who was dating a black guy would appear, she'd remind me that the Bible says they shouldn't be dating each other.

(She was referring to, you know, the 12 tribes of Israel being told to not marry outside their tribe.
...Made ironic by the fact that she was half Native American and my grandpa was a total Scottish pastey white guy, so ah....)

I'm gonna attend GaymerX for the sole reason it is next door to where i live and it'll have crowds of people who enjoys video games, share a common passion about games and i'll be able to talk with people in the game making industry be it indie casual games or them Triples A titles.

As a straight person and unlike the haters, the fact the convention greatly encourage gay gamers doesn't disgust me at all. For me, it gives me hope for a mature conversation about sexuality in games among people of all gender be they straight or LGBT without a 14 years old throwing the F-word on a loud head-set microphone
...and the half naked cosplay dudes will just be icing on the cakes.

But man does it help to stomach the incessant techno!

I kid, of course. I think the LGBT community deserves their own convention. If for no other reason than to escape the millions of idiots on the CoD servers that think "***" is a totally acceptable word that belongs in your everyday vernacular. Or, in their case, every other sentence that escapes their mouths (because book learnin' is for sissies). I hope the event goes well!

If any group of people want to gather together under any pretense or auspice that is not by its nature violent or otherwise malicious I see no reason to oppose it or speak against it. It's not a convention I would attend (I'm not their target demographic) but I do with them all the best.

I would also like to say that, not being their target demographic, if they were to say to me if I were to show up to the event, "your kind isn't welcome here, piss off." so be it. It's their event. Their association. I would have no right to enter and if they refused to extend the privilege that's their right, their prerogative and I'd have no business pushing demands on them.
