E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Is The Console Model On Its Way Out?

Posted on Monday, March 11 @ 16:00:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

For decades, gamers have grown to love and appreciate the ease and convenience that a dedicated game console provides. No drivers to install. No system requirement concerns. Simply put in the disc (or cartridge) and play. This past generation, we've begun to see some of the wonderful perks of console gaming we once took for granted slowly melt away, as console manufacturers create gaming machines that have an unsettling amount in common with PCs and other entertainment devices. Patches, firmware updates, downloadable content, multimedia applications, and more are all now a part of the picture, and while there's plenty of good that comes along with such additions, the inner child in me yearns to return to a much simpler time.

But that will never happen.

The market is changing drastically and at an incredible pace. Gaming consoles are no longer merely boxes that play games; they stream videos, let you browse the internet, allow you to chat with your friends, and so on. Even Nintendo, the gaming company most resistant to change, is making steps (if ever so small) in this direction. Let's face it, if the Big N, a company stunted by its stubborn adherence to tradition, can't fight it, no corporate entity can.

So that's just it. The way we play video games are changing. The market is growing as smartphone and tablet games manage to sink their claws into unsuspecting casual consumers that would have never considered themselves gamers. We're seeing more free-to-play games, more connected, social experiences, and new methods of delivery that provide a new level of ease and convenience to the consumer. As such, the handheld market has changed drastically, and if that's any indication of where traditional home console are headed, you'd better get ready for some major changes.

So what exactly am I trying to say? Is the console model really on its way out? Are high-powered phones and smart televisions truly the way of the future? Obviously we'll still have consoles in the traditional sense for at least another ten years, but after that, who knows? The PlayStation 4's primary function is playing games, but it will undoubtedly serve as a home to dozens of other features, and there's talk that the next Xbox could very well serve as a cable box of sorts that also "just happens" to play games.

Then there's Nintendo, and honestly, I don't even know where to begin with them at this point. They are beginning to feel more and more like a toy company with each passing year, relying on a new gimmick that may or may not work in hooking consumers. The Wii U hasn't caught on just yet and may never prove to be a major success for the Big N, but the company has a bank loaded with cash, so you can expect them to march to the beat of a different drummer for many years to come.

Sony, however, has a whole lot more going on. The company is pushing its mobile and television lines quite hard in conjunction with their gaming division, and if its new approach to streaming with Gaikai and digital distribution through PlayStation Mobile is any indication, Sony may very well be looking to meld all three sectors together and expand the PlayStation platform to any internet-connected device. If your Sony Bravia or PlayStation-enabled phone can stream any game at the press of a button, why have a separate box under the television or a dedicated gaming handheld?

We still don't really know what Microsoft's strategy is, so I'll reserve judgement on them for the time being. That said, it is worth noting that the Xbox manufacturer is a software company at its heart, so don't expect them to stay rooted in the traditional console market forever. The minute the company finds a more profitable and efficient way of delivering games and other media, they'll do it.

What do you think? Are dedicated gaming consoles soon going to be a thing of the past? Let us know in the comments below.

Consoles won't go away any time soon. As long as there are Halos and Call of Duties, consoles will be sold. You can't recapture those games on a tablet or a phone.

As for Nintendo, they always done things their own way for decades. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it has not. Nintendo at least is bold enough to try something new for their gimmicks whereas Sony and probably Microsoft are trying to be cheap PCs in their consoles. Then again, it's either Nintendo stick to what works and people say Nintendo needs to get with the times, or they do attempt to try something new and they're brushed off as being gimmicky. But that's what I like about Nintendo; they do what they want and screw anyone trying to tell em off otherwise.

Yes I know this is gonna get me dubbed as another blind Nintendo fanboy, but meh, that's the beauty of console wars for you!

Personally I always thought you were a bigger fan of Nintendo than any other brand, but I could really give two flying poops what you like. If thats your thing then who am I to judge. What you like doesn't affect me one way or the other, so as far as I'm concerned you should just enjoy what you like and flip everybody that has a problem with it a big crouching donkey hidden butthole...... Or is that flip them the bird? Whatever.

Of course if more people adopted this mindset, perhaps gamers would be a bit more....open minded or whatever.

It's tough to say if Nintendo is being bold with their gimmicks or simply frugal. It is very important to them to always be profitable and sell consoles at a profit (at worst a minimal loss). Sony and Microsoft will bleed money on console sales for years. I honestly think Nintendo is more concerned with straddling the fine line between affordability and profitability and their "gimmicks" is just a means of achieving this goal.

Pc gaming has also become a lot easier. Back in the day it was terribly hard to correctly set up a gaming pc and the correct drivers and pc games had a lot more bugs in them. Nvidia and Ati releasing unified drivers has done a lot to help developers make sure games will run on current gaming GPUs correctly.

Do I see console model going away? No, they are a market distortion that help create semi monopolies. I just see them becoming more like gaming PCs and media centers, which they are.

Consoles were where you found popular and high quality games before PC gaming caught up 20 some years ago so you can call consoles a market distortion all you want, they have earned their right to be here.

As long as there are exclusives for them, consoles will endure. But I'm seriously considering buying a next gen console, because I enjoy PC gaming more and more each day.

Am I the only one that seriously dislikes playing games on a touch screen device with no physical buttons? When I do it, it tends to be out of practicality. When I'm on the train in the morning I have my phone in my pocket...it plays games...I'm sitting there with nothing better to do.

I really like the fact that my android products run emulators so nicely, but have you tried playing Super Mario 3 without physical buttons? Try flying...it's incredibly frustrating. The kind of fine control you need for so many types of games...it seems like it just can't be done if you can't feel the controls. Something like Angry Birds can work, but I hate that game.

I avoid the touchscreens on DS/Vita and the like whenever possible. I can't stand it. It just feels awful. Never as precise, and always just a matter of time till you gunk up your screen.

Agreed. If I can play a DS game without touching the screen once I will. I was into iPhone games like infinity blade when I first got my phone because of the novelty of nice graphics on a phone, and IB got insane reviews, but if it had come out for DS the repetitive gameplay would be a joke and the clever use of swiping wouldn't be so clever. Now I never, ever play iPhone games.

Some precision is needed, or better ones, but then again I'm usually careful with my touch screens. I hate to "rough house" any eletronic

I hate it too man. It's awful. I use my android the same as you basically. I love that it can emulate the classics so smoothly but the crontrols just butcher the games for me. On my android I can barely get past the first stage in any of the several mario games I have emulated. I need more than dual touch recognition. Maybe quad touch recognition would help, but not as much as an actual controller input. Like if a Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo/Ouya controller would connect to my devices.

I just picked up an OTG cable for my Nexus 7 for this reason. I can not stand gaming on my phone anymore. The 4" screen just isn't big enough for my huge thumbs.

Consoles, PCs, portables, and all the other information sources are inevitably going to converge, and most likely integrate directly with humans at some point in the next few decades.

I have to say that while I hate having to patch something each time I actually try to play my dusty PS3, I'd rather it patch than be buggy.

Also, gratuitous thumbs down on an editorial and certain name making comments. Coincidence?

Never understood this (Gaikai) streaming stuff. Surely your mobile device would still need an install of some sort, while the box just syncs data (such as multiplayer) to the device? I'm just not convinced you can send processing power over the airwaves.

    Nice article.
I think the exodus of the console is far from realization. Like some other member mentioned, it's about the call of duties and the co-op modes that can't be emulated on a tablet or phone. The vita should have brought that type of gaming onto the next level, which it failed miserably at, unfortunately. Also, when I think about football, basketball and soccer games, I can't imagine that the popularity of playing with friends on one screen at home or online is ever going to be replaced by sitting alone in the dark on a pc or curled around a tiny iphone screen. Just not going to happen. t least I hope not.

With the way consoles are going they could find their way out. The big 3 are getting greedy, wanting more licensing fees, more this, more that. Cost of development is always rising, and the truly original games, indie games, are turning to PC where it costs nearly nothing (in comparison). All three are steering away from what makes a console a console. Let me play online, let me have my BC, give me a damn controller with buttons. They are implementing too much into consoles which is raising costs, cloud gaming, streaming, all this social feature crap that most gamers don't care about. Get rid of that crap and give us a nice solid console that goes online and I can download my games. Get rid of apps, Skype, Kinect, Move, motion gaming, touch controls and just freaking go back to what console gaming was all about.
