PS4: 7 Things We Hope To See In Sony's Next-Gen Console

Posted on Friday, February 1 @ 11:06:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

4. Backwards Compatibility... Via Cloud Streaming

We know that Sony has something cloud-centric cooking with its recent acquisition of Gaikai, and I really hope that it comes in the form of a streamable back catalog. Perhaps we'll see a second tier of PlayStation Plus, where those who shell out a bit of extra cash will have access to the massive libraries of the original PlayStation and PS2. Who knows, maybe they'll even find a way to squeeze some PlayStation 3 games on there as well.

And why stop with just PlayStation 4 support? Who says this service can't carry over to the PlayStation Vita as well? Clearly I'm a bit of a dreamer, but something like this isn't too far out of the realm of possibility. Will we see it day one? That would be ideal, but something tells me we'll have to be patient as we wait for Sony to work out all of the kinks.

3. Second Screen Connectivity With Vita

For whatever reason, Sony likes to copy Nintendo. We saw it with the Move controller, and again with LittleBigPlanet Karting and PlayStation All-Stars. I really hope that they don't feel compelled to create a whole new tablet controller, when they've already got the perfect solution out on store shelves. There are loads of untapped potential for interconnectivity between the PlayStation Vita and the upcoming console. If done right—which sadly probably won't happen—the PlayStation Vita could blow the Wii U's GamePad out of the water.

The issue here is that the Vita almost certainly won't come bundled with the PS4, so not everyone will have this second screen option. [CrossBuy for PS4 & Vita? If only. ~Ed. Nick] As such, developers won't be quite as compelled to take advantage of the feature, especially if the Vita continues to struggle. I'm just holding out hope that Sony's got something so awesome by way of interconnectivity that gamers and developers will be willing to invest in the concept.

2. "PlayStation 4"

Sony opted out of going with the traditional numbering scheme for the PSP's successor, but I really hope that doesn't carry over to their console line. If the Wii U has taught us anything, it's that consumers like things simple and straightforward. If they decide to call it the PlayStation Orbis or something else along those ridiculous lines, they're going to confuse the average consumer. Sure, the number four bears some sort of negative connotation in Japanese, but seriously, are they really going to go out of their way to avoid using that number? I don't think so.

Plus, we're anticipating a bunch of fourth entries in a number of Sony's signature first-party franchises. Imagine if they came out of the gate swinging with God of War 4, Killzone 4, and even Uncharted 4; I wish I could throw Resistance 4 and/or Jak 4 in there, but that's a bit farfetched. Wouldn't that be a great marketing opportunity for the company? Oh wait...

1. A Price Tag Under $599

If there's one thing Sony should have learned after the launch of the PlayStation 3, it's that consumers are really turned off by a console with a price tag over $500. If the company has truly learned their lesson, we won't see the PS4 priced over $400, which is very possible, especially when considering the rumors that Sony is using off-the-shelf parts. There really isn't much more to say to this point. It's as simple as finding the right balance between cost and performance. Let's just hope Sony's found that sweet spot.

What are you hoping to see Sony include in its next-generation console? Let us know in the comments below.

If it's not under 400 bucks, I think I would rather buy a Lego Death Star for 400 bucks. lol

It certainly would be a tough sell if it's priced over that.

I don't care about 4K support. I just bought a new 70" TV from Walmart for my living room and it doesn't have 4K. It's just 1080p 120Hz.

I'll be amazed if they can actually make a game worth me buying the system for.

I bought the original PS just so I could play Warhawk - and I was blown away by all the other games like Twisted Metal and Jet Moto - mostly games from Singletrac. Now, Sony's in-house development is on life support and 3rd party developers develop for 360 and Wii too if they can.

Which is great, because when the first 3D compatible game came out, I thought it was a waste of time and money because it felt like such a gimmick (and also, there was no way I'd ever afford a 3D TV). Now I have two 3D TV's in my house, and games like Arkham City (and I hate to say it: BlOps II) make excellent use of it.

It won't happen. There's no way the PS4 is getting 4K support. That feature alone would make the console impossible to afford. The cheapest 4K TV is $12,000. Are you ready to spend that kind of money on a video game console, and then spend a similar amount on a TV to show said resolution? Didn't think so.

Sorry, but this rumor of the PS4 getting 4K support has to stop, it's unrealistic. You can dream all you want, but don't expect it, it's not happening. Especially now, with Sonys financial situation. Maybe with the PS5, when 4K becomes standard technology (if there will even be a PS5), but not the PS4. The goal of the PS4 needs to be to get games running in 1080p at 60FPS.

You know Ultra HD uses a standard HDMI input, right? Having the option to output 4K and making 4K a requirement are two completely different things. The most important thing is that Sony, the company that's pioneering 4K (or UHD), has the opportunity to flaunt it when the next console generation launches. Preparing for it is key, so that all that's required to output true 4K is a firmware update when 4K becomes a viable market (in the near future).

Sony also just happens to be one of the big pushers of Blu-ray technology, and everyone but Sony thought the PS3 was going to fail because of it. But let me ask you this: how many HDDVDs do you own?

My hope is they fold and sell their exclusives to Microsoft... but as that isn't going to happen, I will have to keep buying Playstations in order to play Uncharted/inFamous/God of War etc. So I guess I just hope it doesn't suck too much in comparison to the new Xbox.

Why do you dislike the PlayStation brand so much? Is it the hardware itself? The controller? PlayStation Network?

All of the above sadly, as a PC gamer I love that the controller works with pretty much every game on PC as well as its ergonomic design. The Playstation Network (while free) I have found not nearly as reliable and fast as Xbox Live. The hardware itself is fine, except that media streaming with Xbox is insanely easy and works any time I try it, whereas the PS3 I have to use a 3rd party program (ps3 media server) which doesn't always work, I have to reset it half the time to get my PS3 to pick it up.

When 1080P "Hi Def" TVs first appeared low-grade computer monitors could easily muster up twice the resolution. The ultimate viewing experience for Doom 3, for example, was in 2048X1536, a resolution good monitors were capable of...in 2005.

This is a dream list that likely isn't even close to what we'll actually get. I do think Vita connectivity is inbound, as well as free online (MS is the only one charging for this now) However, the rest of this won't happen. Sony made it clear they're done with numbered systems, so it's likely they'll go with another name. The thing about this list that bothers me the most though is any kind of expectation of the powerful PS4 having 4K support WHILE keeping a price below $599. Sorry to bust your dreams, but that's impossible. The cheapest 4K TV you can get is $12,000, this feature is very expensive. How are they going to cram that into the console and keep a reasonable price? It won't happen. If you want a powerful console at a fair price, you should be hoping it doesn't have 4K support. Sorry, but this list is setting standards too high to be realistic. Rather than 4K, running games in 1080p at 60FPS is more realistic, and it would be more than enough for next gen.

I don't see how people like the xbox controller over the ps3. I own both systems and the ps3 controller is by far the best in every way but i do agree with the triggers needing to be altered. Having that off scale analog stick on the xbox is annoying and the main reason i don't use my xbox(unless sony is doing "maintenance")

Please release reliable, quiet hardware. The original ps3 and 360 were nowhere near as good as their later iterations (though yes, the ps3 did strip some features namely backwards compatibility which pissed me right now)

Backwards compatibility for PS3 games out of the box would be nearly impossible. Unless the PS4 is an iterative improvement over the PS3 (if they're smart, they would have vetoed that idea before whoever seriously suggested it could finish the sentence and then fired that person) it would require emulation and emulation is only a serious option, especially in a case where the hardware is as unorthodox as the PS3, with hardware that is massively more powerful than whatever is being simulated. Many routines that are handled natively by hardware have to be rewritten as software instructions and then run in order to do the emulation. In the PS3's case that would be a logistical nightmare on the best modern PCs, which are many times more powerful than the PS4 will be.

Just an FYI, games won't be in 4K, so those of you expecting this quantum leap in graphics are in for disappointment. At best you'll see a 1080p 60FPS standard.

And that, too, will break under various strains. The big bottlenecks haven't changed in the past 20 years, really. One issue that united gamers and general software users on PC back in the '90s (other than a raft of complaints against Microsoft) was that lack of RAM was always the more pressing issue than lack of processor speed. Processors were and are much more powerful than they need to be. It looks sexy on a box to announce the number of cores, generation number and clock speed but what is lost in all of that is whether or not the amount of RAM in the machine is sufficient.

these are all great but I'll trade them all to keep free online. In this day its just crazy not to charge so the fact Sony doesn't is HUGE. You can say what you want about Sony, but I think the free online is more customer appreciation than Microsoft or Nintendo can claim.

fully backwards compatibility and dual vita screen (or maps and stuff on the Vita screen) would be awesome. Didn't Kojima kinda hint that they'd use the Vita screen in Ground Zeroes?

PS4K!!! can't wait for a decent 4k source, then I can go 4K projector shopping. Certain games like critter crunch or fat princess could be playable at 4K why not?

I would rather wait a year for 4k than get another 1080 system. I've been playing at higher than 1080 on PC for years. HDMI 1.0 was maxed out at 1080p by the way, but I think 1.4 does 2560x1600 but we'll need 2.0 to do 4k @ 60fps

RAM and hard drive space is what I'm hoping for, even a totally optical drive free device with a bank of high capacity ssds I'd be happy with 3TB minimum, between my Blu ray dvd player, PS3 and media pc, I'm OK for Bluray/DVD playback.
