Death Stranding release date

No, The Death Stranding Release Date Isn’t June 2019 (and Here’s Why)

Players are anxious to know when the Death Stranding release date is and a recent slip-up by a retailer may have revealed it. Despite this possible leak, odds are that they got the date in question wrong.

Death Stranding is an upcoming game from Hideo Kojima. It features the voice acting and motion capture talents of Norman Reedus (The Walking DeadBlade 2), Mads Mikkelsen (HannibalDoctor Strange), and Léa Seydoux (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Spectre). We know who’s in the game and that Hideo Kojima is making it, but details on what it’s all about are pretty light. It’s a Hideo Kojima game, after all – who could possibly predict what the auteur has come up with?

Speaking of predictions, a tweet from Geoff Keighley was joking about the potential for Walmart Canada’s Twitter to leak information about games that are set to be revealed at The Game Awards. The Game Awards is exactly what it says on the tin – an awards show centered on video games created by Mr. Keighley whose previous work included the founding of the Spike Video Game Awards. Nominees for the show had been announced in mid-November. Walmart Canada has a reputation for prematurely releasing information about the release dates of games, though the information isn’t always accepted without some skepticism.

A Twitter user called Yinob replied with a picture of the PS4 listing for the game on Walmart Canada’s website. It shows the Death Stranding release date as June 30, 2019. Yinob asks Walmart Canada to respond and their answer appears to confirm that this is an accurate date:

Amazon had previously listed the Death Stranding release date as March 29, 2019. (The digital retailer has since changed the date to December 31, 2019.) Much like Amazon, Walmart Canada is likely using a placeholder date for their online store listing. A few clues point us towards the reasoning.

Firstly, June 30, 2019, is a Sunday. Games most often release on a Tuesday and occasionally a Thursday. Secondly, Hideo Kojima himself has pegged the Death Stranding release date as taking place somewhere between 2019 and 2020. Finally (and perhaps most importantly) – Walmart Canada owned up to their mistake and outright stated that the date is a placeholder.

The Game Awards are just about a week away and we may very well hear something about the Death Stranding release date at the show. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see how Hideo Kojima surprises us.
