Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Nightmare DLC

Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Nightmare DLC revealed

The latest adventure of Lara Croft, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, arrived in September last year and seemingly brought the Tomb Raider prequel trilogy to a close, but there are still a few DLC expansions to go before young Lara gets lost in her giant mansion for the last time. We’ve already had one expansion, The Forge, which arrived in November, and now finally the Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Nightmare DLC has been revealed as the second expansion.

The name of the new expansion was actually revealed in a pop-up on the Shadow of the Tomb Raider main menu screen, with just the logo and the words “new content coming soon.” Well, it’s very soon indeed, as Square Enix has just announced that the Shadow of the Tomb Raider The Nightmare DLC will see a release date of January 22, which is a week from today. The publisher revealed this in a tweet, which you can see below.

The rather spooky-looking setting seems to suggest a visit to some sort of haunted cathedral, unless the expansion will be one giant hallucinogenic experience, which is exactly what happened in the Baba Yaga: Temple of the Witch DLC expansion for the previous game Rise of the Tomb Raider. That was similarly supernatural in outward appearances, but was all the result of a drug trip. The tweet promises that The Nightmare will see Lara Croft face off against “familiar enemies and fallen friends.” A press release states that the DLC will feature one new challenge tomb, which has Lara searching for “a powerful and mysterious weapon,” and will face enemies “who look like but are not like any she’s ever faced, and confront the deadliest enemy of all: herself.”

There will also be a new gear pack called “Fear Incarnate” for Lara Croft to equip. This includes “The Scales of Q” outfit, which boasts twice as much resistance to melee attacks, and a new climbing axe called “The Grip of Fear,” which is designed for fighting and has an increased chance to knock enemies down for longer.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Nightmare DLC will release on January 22.
