Tell GR | What’s the most disappointing game you’ve ever played?

There’s nothing worse than waiting (im)patiently for several months for a brand new game, then finding out it’s a barrel of toss. We’ll take as many bad games as you’ve got because nothing competes with a disappointing game, and we’ve played far too many of them over the years.

The GR editorial team described their most disappointing video game experience below, but we want to know your thoughts. As always, leave your own responses in the comments section, and we’ll feature our favorite in tomorrow’s Tell GR.

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “One of the perks of this job is that you always kinda know if a game is going to suck or not before it releases. Even when the vast majority are getting super pumped for a new release, you’ve usually heard through the grapevine that your expectations should be reduced ahead of schedule. With that being said, I haven’t truly been disappointed by a game in a long time. The last time the wind was really taken out of my sails was with Halo 3, which wasn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but one that just didn’t hook me like I thought it would. After being hopelessly addicted to Halo 2, I skipped college to play Halo 3 on release day and it just didn’t grab me the way I thought it would. At that point, I was probably burned out by playing too much Halo 2 for the past three years, but it never gelled with me in the way that its predecessor did.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: New Gundam Breaker was a total let down for me. I absolutely loved Gundam Breaker 3 and had played it for the first time just before New Gundam Breaker released. New Gundam Breaker is a step back from its predecessor in almost every way. It plays worse, the customization is more limited, and it was just generally not much fun. The biggest problem was that Bandai Namco had a completely different team do New Gundam Breaker than the one that did the first three, and they swapped engines, so the game was set up for failure from the start. I hope that despite the poor reception for the game that Bandai Namco gives the series another chance and lets the original team handle development so we can get a worthy successor to Gundam Breaker 3.”

Michael Leri, features editor: Dead Space 3 will probably forever be my most disappointing game. I remember getting it at launch, playing it, and just not being able to accept that it was a bloated, soulless husk of what it once was. That feeling didn’t stop either as I completed it around seven times just hoping that it would just click if I kept going. To this day, I still feel as though just one more run will make me “get” it.”

Question: What game needs a battle royale mode?

Battousai8: “Since I’ve recently started playing again thanks to the surge in new players thanks to it being on PS+, I think For Honor has some BR potential. Not sure if you would take looting out of it, but you would at least have to make it unique given the melee aspect of the game, and the fact the each character pretty much has unique weapons. I think I just like the idea of melee focused style of game.”
