Call of Duty Black Ops 4: Treyarch Defends Decision Not to Include Single Player

It’d be a huge understatement to say that Treyarch has stepped on some toes with their announcement of Call of Duty Black Ops 4. If you aren’t complaining about how ‘wait, there’s another Call of Duty game?’ Then you’re no doubt going to complain about the content in it. Well, maybe this time some players have a point.

The new Call of Duty Black Ops 4 has scrapped its single-player campaign in favor of working on expanding its multiplayer mode, as well as its newest feature: battle royale. Considering how successful PUBG and Fortnite have been, it would have been naive not to assume Call of Duty would jump on that particular bandwagon too.

Of course, some fans aren’t too happy about that and some are accusing Treyarch of forgetting what Call of Duty is even about. However, as Treyarch co-studio head Dan Bunting stated in an interview with Eurogamer, that isn’t quite the reason why they’ve turned away from the single-player campaign.

In fact, Bunting made it clear in the interview that there was never a “traditional campaign” for Call of Duty Black Ops 4 in the first place. He emphasized the importance of playing the game with friends, stating “we’ve always wanted to tell stories in different ways. We’ve always wanted to celebrate our community, especially how you play the game with friends.”

Nonetheless, Eurogamer hit Bunting with a question that no doubt left a lot to think about. What did Treyarch think about individuals in the ‘no campaign, no sale’ camp?

“I think change is always going to be hard for people. I would say to our fans, Treyarch has never let you down over the years.” Bunting stated. “This is a studio you know is always going to deliver the best of the experiences you know and love, especially with the Black Ops series. We are delivering so much more of what players spend most of their time doing in our games in the series.”

While Treyarch may want fans to have faith in them, and while there will be new modes that will allow players to dig deep into the backstory of the characters they play in multiplayer, will it be enough for players to overlook the lack of a campaign?
