How about this for the expensive stuff, prices found on Newegg:
CPU: i5-370K ($219)
GPU: HD 7850 ($169)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Jonathan posted ($109)
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 madster posted ($29)
PSU: CORSAIR CX500 ($59)
Would all of that jazz get along? Total that's $585 before rebates (and pretty much all of them have rebates). I like the Antec case and I'll get a SSD, 8GB of RAM,and the peripherals later on (after Christmas) when the rebates come back and I'm busy slinging crawfish at work. I'm pretty sure the Windows 7 came with this current PC, but doesn't Microsoft do a student discount on their OS's from time to time? |

That CPU and mobo wouldn't work together. If you're decided on the 3570k, when searching for a motherboard you need to make sure it's a LGA 1155 socket type....Basically, anything that says Z77 on it will work.
Something like this Gigabyte. |

I don't think you would be able to Cossfire this card with your 6770 (if that's what you meant, if not ignore the rest of the post), as they are from a different family/architecture. Generally if the cards are the same series and range, you'll be able to Crossfire them. E.g 79xx series, so 7970 and 7950 will work, 78xx series 7870 and 7850 will work, but work to the speed of the slower card.
It gets a bit more complicated lower down the range with 77xx and lower series as normally these are just rebranded from the previous series. |

$150 for a card that can be run on a 300w power supply and will continue to max out games throughout 2013 and likely 2014?
Yes, it's a very, very good deal.
It won't work crossfire with the 6770.
No point having a faster/slower card than what you already have with crossfire anyway, as the run at the same speed as the lowest one in any crossfire setup. So if you have a single HD7850 and 3x HD7870, they'll all run the 7850 speeds. _________________

Damn, 100% claimed, AND the waitlist is full. I bought one from Newegg, it comes with a $20 gift card so at least there's that. Also picked up a HD7850, that comes with a $20 mail-in rebate. I'm selling AC3 and Sleeping Dogs to Amazon so I should be getting about $62 worth of Amazon gift cards, I'll use them for some of the other components. |

Like to point out that nobody actually buys Windows 7 anymore, too. Not even Microsoft themselves give a shit - the genuine check update is optional and un-checked by default.
So, grab yourself a nice SP1 copy and join the botnet today.
Also, that cheap 3570K was a damn good deal. _________________

To be fair the genuine check update was originally set to download by default but there was a outcry against it by people because it fucked up genuine copies as well. Then there was word of a class action lawsuit calling it malware.
In the end Microsoft decided it was better to stay out of courts. _________________ “Yeah but when does EA come in when your trying for auto erotic asphyxiation and decide that you are really trying to commit suicide? Then they force you to do what they want.” |

I ordered that card. Figured it being the same brand as my mobo, I should be very happy with it. It also comes with Far Cry 3. I'm looking forward to this, but now I need a monitor to go with it.
Monitor shopping has to be 9001% harder than GPU shopping. _________________

Don't cheap out on the monitor, trust me on this. You can have all the graphics cards in the world, but if your monitor looks like shit it's pointless.
Personally, i'd grab a reasonably priced non-3D 120hz monitor. Then play something at 120FPS and feel dat smoothness. _________________

That's the thing, though. Only TVs list the hertz. Monitors say crap like "5ms response time." _________________

Not exactly true, response time is one thing they list. Refresh rate is another.
Please remember if you are going to build a 120hz setup you have to have a rig powerful enough to push above 60fps to see real benefit.
My best of luck and wishes go out to you. Building a new pc can be one of the best investments in entertainment you can make. _________________ “Yeah but when does EA come in when your trying for auto erotic asphyxiation and decide that you are really trying to commit suicide? | Is this motherboard a good deal? Is it $30 cheaper than this one (after rebate) because it's smaller or because it's comparatively a P.O.S? If it appears sound to you guys, would it be compatible with the 3570K I bought? It comes with free memory too. |

The more expensive one is worth the extra price IMO....has better overall specs, plus you wouldn't have to deal with a micro board.
And yes they both would work. |

| A lot of monitors I've seen don't list the hertz.
I did happen to find this, though. Tell me what you think.

That's the best, least expensive one I've found. I did the advanced search for hertz, but they were all super pricey.
Also, what's the deal with the contrast ratio, exactly? They list a huge ratio, and then a small one. What gives? _________________
