Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Japan Sales Set New Record

Nintendo is learning this week that you can never have too many good sales of a good thing. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Japan sales have been, yes, smashing records since its release last week.

Famitsu’s data for first week sales (h/t gamesindustry.biz)  indicates that the game has sold 1.2 million units in the first three days after launch, which was on December 7. This doesn’t include digital sales of the game, so this is actually a pretty impressive number. It goes without saying that this is the best launch for any Switch game in Japan thus far.

In terms of console sales, Nintendo has sold around 280,000 units of the Switch last week, doubling the 107,000 units that were sold the previous week. This pushes lifetime sales of the console in Japan up to 6.1 million.

Japan isn’t the only place where Smash Bros. Ultimate is doing well. United Kingdom sales this week show that the game is doing big business everywhere. It has quickly reached the top of the UK charts and has already sold more physical copies than both Pokemon Let’s Go games. And, just like in Japan, this does not include digital sales.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has also become the best selling title in the series in the UK, selling 300 percent more physical copies than Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It also led to a 115 percent increase in Switch console sales.

The game has received critical acclaim since it’s launch. It has scored a 93 average of Metacritic since its release.

Nintendo of America, nor its Japanese equivalent, has commented on how Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has done sales-wise in the US, but you’d imagine the company is pleased with the record numbers in the Far East, especially with the six million mark being reached and digital numbers yet to arrive.
