I'm always skeptical when a new game comes out that is labeled by anyone as a game that will be a killer of a Blizzard product.

I am as big a Diablo 2 fan as they come, and was completely let down by Diablo 3, despite playing it in denial for a few months. Ultimately, it failed me. Great game, but not at all a worthy Diablo sequel.

Path of Exile has nailed everything, everything I wanted in Diablo 3, Path of Exile has it. At first I was a little slow getting into it. It felt overwhelming. The gem system, currency system, and passive skill trees are HUGE. But once it clicks, and you figure it out, you're hooked.

Diablo 3 had incredible combat for an ARPG. It lacked however, depth, atmosphere, music, skill tree, end game, a reason to reroll, cool itemization.

The skill tree will just blow your mind, it's HUGE. And so diverse. As well as the gem system and the currency system, the way you can alter all your items, etc. You'll never build a perfect character.. it'll have replayability for years.

I never rerolled a character once in Diablo 3, I had one of each, it was all I needed. I completely boinked my Ranger up in PoE, and rerolled when she hit level 34 because she was useless. My new ranged is level 25 already, and it's been an incredible experience rerolling now that I have an idea how the game works. I'm just smashing things, where as before I felt like a child.

I'm sure I'll end up rerolling again, but it's great fun, and something I loved about Diablo 2. Gives the game great replayability. And leveling again wasn't a chore, it's been more fun than my first playthrough.

THe atmosphere and music are bang on. Something Diablo 3 completely lacks. I don't think anything will ever be nostalgic for me from Diablo 3, but I guarantee Path of Exile will. I need the atmosphere and music to enjoy and get immersed in the game, and this game has it.

I'm not at end game yet, this game is actually challenging and I have a feeling it'll be a while before I'm there. THe hardest difficulty is apparently a road block, and if you don't build your character right you'll be rerolling in an awful hurry. But there are items you collect at high level end game called maps, that open up secret levels with badass bosses/mobs and even more badass loot.

Additionally it has ladders, hardcore, etc. A ladder, something Diablo 3 REALLY needed to promote replayability. It has a million other game modes planned but I haven't got far into reading them yet.

Long story short, great game is great, and I'm pumped to keep playing.

Oh and it isn't pay to win. There are microtransactions, but they're only for cosmetic things.

Agreed. Path of Exile is an amazing title. I'm planning to write something about it... maybe soon...

Is it a visual feast? Will it require a towel for cleanup? I'm all about great gameplay above all else but I want a lot of eye candy too. The visuals in Diablo 3 sure did disappoint.

Visually, it's relative. For a small team of independent developers (maybe five people), the animations and graphics are superb. Against a team of hundreds of Blizzard employees, it's hard to compare. But I was disappointed with the animations and environments with Path of Exile.

I've been playing this here-and-there since Nick talked about it on the podcast. I like it, it's just hard to find time to play it. Also, thinking of a name for your character that isn't already being used...ffffffffffffffffff...

the name of my new Ranger is "ItsJess"... was trying to think of a name, had a few drinks, had new girl on.. staring at my female ranger.. what am i gonna name her!?

then the TV told me itsjess

now I regret it though Sad

especially since the only friend that plays this game with me just started dating a girl named Jess. Feels awkward

I downloaded it awhile ago I try to play it from time to time. It's a great game no doubt but I think the Genre is missing something. BUT I know this game was intended directly for a more "Old School" Audience.

BTW Dual Melee Ranger for the Win

Just downloaded it, played for 10 minutes and was able to immediately recognize that this is what Diablo 3 should have been (just in the intro area). I like it so far and it runs great on my 6 year old rig too.

Anybody know how the multiplayer works? I see a lot of people in town giving me an MMO-ish feel and stuff but I assume everything is personal instances outside of common non-combat areas. If I get my roommate to download it how can we co-op together?

edit: also, wtf is up with the name system? Everything I tried to input was apparently taken by somebody else. After 5-6 inputs I FINALLY found one along the lines of something I wanted for my witch

Good game. It slows down A LOT after lvl 50, but it got me finally stop playing LoL! Even now that PoE has slowed down, I don't miss LoL, so that's a nice break. ~62 marauder on default so far, got a bunch of friends from work to play it with, definitely worth checking out if you haven't.

Just had a quick play with it, looks pretty good. I love how there's no tutorial, because i knew straight away what buttons did what. Doesn't seem too daunting - even with that bloody huge skills list.
The graphics are fairly pretty - that opening level with the lightning is pretty sexy.

Level 3, woo.

The chances of making a good build your first time are not very good (unless you just look one up). After you hit cruel or merciless, you'll realize your mistakes. Get a lot of hp would be my advice for any tree (unless you're doing the dual totem build, then YOU don't really do anything anyway). I made my first character pure tank to play with my friends (one hander/shield), but have too much armor/resists and not enough HP. My second marauder I made a 2H/leap slam character and have so much more hp, even without good defenses I have far less trouble.

frozenmidew is my IGN

still loving it.

it runs like SHIT on my 7870. runs like butter on my 670. never dips below 70FPS max settings on my 670. my 7870 literally freezes for seconds at a time.

ie. this game does not get along with 7870's

is anyone running lots of Maps? lets group up, not ninja and have funzies.

speaking of maps im fresh out if anyone wants to donate some. started at 10, the run lasted probably about 50-60 maps before i ran out. do not crave farming docks again
