Resident Evil 2 live action trailer

Resident Evil 2 live-action trailer is a brilliant homage to George A Romero’s 1998 version

A new Resident Evil 2 live-action trailer dropped today, and just like the remake itself, it’s a wonderful recreation of the original trailer that George A. Romero created for the game back in 1998. Featuring a terrified Leon and Claire making their way through Raccoon City, the trailer is the latest of a small revival that we’ve seen for the live action video game trailers in recent years.

The trailer opens with Leon edging towards a police car before a zombie reaches out and Leon bids a quick getaway. Things only get worse for poor old Leon after this though, with hordes of zombies closing in on either side, forcing him down a narrow encaged area. Claire pops out soon after and almost gets her head shot off before Leon politely asks her to move so he can dome a zombie. He’s a nice boy, that Leon.

Those of you who were alive during the original Resident Evil 2 – or those of you with access to, y’know, YouTube – might spot that the new trailer is eerily familiar to the sequence that Dawn of the Dead director George A. Romero shot for Capcom back in the ’90s. As you might suspect, it’s been designed by the company behind the trailer, SpecialGun Productions, as an homage to that original trailer, even going so far as to include that brilliant eye-lock with the camera from both Leon and Claire at the end.

The live-action trailer marks something of a revival for the style as well. With Capcom’s Resi 2 trailer being the latest example after the likes of Fallout 76, Far Cry 5, Just Cause 4, and Dishonored 2 were just a few games that used live-action trailers during the lead up to release. What do you think? How does this Resident Evil 2 live-action trailer compare to original, and what’s your favorite live-action trailer for a game?
