RIP Robin Williams (1951-2014)
By KevinS
Posted on 08/14/14
Robin Williams (1951-2014) Robin Williams was an absolutely exceptional comedian, talented actor, and holder of a special place in video game history: He was the first really famous gamer I know of. I’m sure there were others, but they kept a comparatively low profile, unlike one...

Yeah that's the feeling that makes me understand the 7.5 or lower, but games shouldn't be punished for being anything other than "fun fun fun fun fun F-U-N FUN." Games can be serious, dramatic, tense, stressful. Do people go to the movie and go "jeez, all that action in The Avengers was a real turn off. 7/10"? No, and games should be able to reach all these different emotional levels as well.

I'm fine with that. If there is one thing this game does right, it is the tone set by music, ambience noise and acting. It's not tense just cuz it's difficult, it's tense because of how it plays and the setting and the people within it.

So, i totally saw this the other day and the only thing i could think of...

How the hell did Sony allow this to be released on the PS3?
It could've been the PS4s killer app, and more importantly, it looks sexy. Very, very sexy. As in, 'why do we need to buy a PS4' sexy.

Gonna be buying myself a copy later once they start cropping up used on ebay.

I think it was a good idea to release on PS3, and I don't really think it has "killer app" potential, though I think it is one of the best games I've played, full stop. A system-mover has to have a certain broad appeal, (be a super secret agent: Metal Gear, drive a stable of high-end exotics that would make a Dubai business magnate envious: Gran Turismo, etc.) and with that glowing endorsement out of the way, I haven't been able to think of a single person I can recommend this one to. Sure as hell not my older sister, I think the opening 20 minutes would traumatize her. Mass Effect kind of became a point of bonding for us, but even as dark as it can get, it's still pretty light fare in contrast to The Last of Us.

It actually reminded me a lot of when I finished Cormac McCarthy's the road (which was N obvious influence on the game). I was profoundly moved after finishing it, and had all this stuff I wanted to talk about, but things are so bleak there just wasn't an approachable vector on it for people who hadn't sought it out for themselves, and among those that did there were many who (very understandably) weren't able to see through it and set the thing down just feeling numb.

Not a killer app, just the biggest title launch in quite some time.

But imagine this, combined with The Last Guardian as launch titles for the PS4. It would've launched very strong, perhaps strong enough to get better first month sales than the xshit1, which is looking to sell just as many consoles as the PS4 because of all the little 13yo fucktards and frat-bros.

Shut up about making The Last of Us a PS4 game. That's stupid.

I'm sorry Madster. That was just internet snipping, so don't pay no mind. It's just... why?

Sony needs this game on PS3. They need that last, big system-selling/console-defining game to help them start the next generation on the right foot, they need a game that the extremely thrifty will say "boy, when I see a used PS3 and The Last of Us for $100 or whatever, I'm gonna buy the hell out of that." Even better, this one is actually landing JUST before the PS4's launch. I have to think that God of War II's PS2 release landing after PS3's launch did some damage to the previous system's debut when combined with the horrible and diminutive launch software, in addition to "five hundred and ninety nine dollars".

This is an amazing game. I don't give a shit if it's on the Game Boy, so long as it plays like it does. Putting this game out as a PS4 exclusive would actually HURT it as a game in sales (and in quality since Naughty Dog has become so mastered at plumbing the depths of cell and PS3 architecture) making a $60 game purchase into a $500 hardware purchase. The Last of Us is not designed for... let's say at best 2 million units at retail before the end of the year. It's designed as an amazing exclusive for a system with over 50 million installed, that way it can push through another 10-20 million consoles in longterm sales, because hey, the PS3 is still a cheap and capable Bluray player. PS4 has to price high for the new chips inside, whereas PS3 gets to ride the Bluray tech down the price ladder.

So yeah, that's why you're wrong! Just your friendly neighbor game critic here... you know... doing this professionally... :-/

So, I'm almost through Pittsburgh and might finally get to see what looks to be Fort Duquesne Bridge. How much more of the story is there? Urban says on my stream I'm boring, because I'm constantly looking around for supplies.

Ugh, you got a ways. I got through and you're in for a real treat coming up. Not a happy treat but the story gets painful and pulls you in even more.

So this game is like they took Enslaved and threw a Walking Dead motif over it.

I think I'll start again on new game plus but continue to play in normal mode, because I want to own things.

Might try hard mode, I dunno.

I also agree, The Last of Us is a PS3 game and deserves to be there. I don't think it's necessary to see The Last of Us on the PS4.

Also, I tried to draw a portrait of Joel from memory, on a tiny post it note... I stuffed up his hair. Sad

Beat hard mode wasn't really that hard at all. Only like two parts I felt would be difficult for most people.
I feel like i shouldn't talk about the ending yet so I'll hold it in..
I was thinking about doing game + But then I decided it wouldn't be fun at all and would remove the best part of the game the Tension. so now I'm doing the survivor difficulty and seeing how that works.

Man, that was an intense game. The ending was the toughest in my opinion. I kept restarting events, because I didn't want to lose my arrows when they break.

God Survivor is intense not having the listening mode dampens you a lot.

Ugh. If you do a lets play do it in that mode it will provide a better feed I think. more surprises since you can't see what s coming

I thought the whole point of Let's Play videos was doing a blind-run of the game, which I did live in front of the Ustream audience.
