Yesterday, while cleaning up my media center, I found my copy of Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus, which I bought sometime before Christmas last year. I had been pretty excited about this game pre-release, what with it being the first "traditional", albeit shorter than usual,...

Could someone just give a breakdown on what to look for? There is so many different things with the only difference being a digit on the name or a letter tacked on. I mean what's the diff between a phenom ii x4 970 and 975? Or a radean hd6670 1gb video card or a nvidia gt 330 1gb video card? Is there really such thing a "gaming" ram or is ram just ram?

Gamer Ram tends to be the faster ram versions a company would put out. You really don't know though unless you look at the ram timings.

Easiest way to find out the different between two videocards is picking a game you care about and see which gets a higher fps. You could also look into the clockrate, memory frequency, type of gddr memory and amount.

Here is the difference between the 970 and 975. Its not much, and many people take the extra money they would spend and use it on good cooling and just overclock the 970.

Could you tell me how exactly I pick and game and see the FPS? Certainly I'm not to buy both cards and test which one works best? Are there websites that have that data already?

Greenlantern posted a excellent link
CPU
http://anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

GPU
http://anandtech.com/bench/GPU13/583
Under GPU13 Product Benchmarks, Choose the two videocards you want to compare.
Then click View Comparison.

If that link doesnt have what I'm looking for, I will commonly google the video card name and the game I want to see it with.
So "gtx 760 battlefield 3" Brings me to a first link of a review MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr OC - Battlefield 3 Performance.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2013/07/04/msi-geforce-gtx-760-twin-frozr-oc-2gb-revie/3
They were even nice enough to have a chart comparing its performance to other cards.
You can see each one of those charts is for a different resolution.

I suppose that website confused me at first but I think I go it now thanks.

. Now this might being getting nitty gritty, but say the CPU benchmarks at 60+ fps on a game (listed on that site) and the GPU only gets around 30 fps on the same game. Is there someway to predict my FPS if I had both that GPU and CPU (+ram) even tho the benchmarked fps's aren't the same?

EDIT: In all honesty I'm probably just being nitpicky cuz given how my PC is now anything I buy will be light years ahead. As in at least 4x cores, 4x GPU and 4x ram memory. And I really only what it for SWTOR, neverwinte online and a few steam games during sales

Easiest way to know what to buy is to just ask here. Put up a budget and what you'd want the computer for mainly and someone will spec you a system.

Predicting FPS, If the CPU is capable of 60+ and GPU only 30, then you'll be bottlenecked to the lower amount.

Yep.

In general these days the CPU is unlikely to be the bottleneck. You're talking $1000+ on current GPUs to make the bottleneck a quad core from 2008 (i7-920).

Best bet is probably just to post up your budget here so we can put together a parts list. Then you can google everything on it to learn more.

What system do you have already? Parts from that might still be ok to use in your new build.

Do you need monitor, mouse, keyboard and OS included in that price?

It's a 6 yr old dual core non-gaming pc I bought at best buy cuz I got a steep employee discount so it's really nothing really relevent to gaming pc or anything current.

All I need is the tower I have all other periphs and software

I've come up with this from Newegg, which is over your budget. If you wanted I could spec you an APU build (where the processor and graphics are are integrated onto one chip - it's cheaper but not as powerful).

Could probably cheap out a bit on the case and HDD.
Add in old HDD(s) for extra space

Yeah $500 is a really tight budget. I'd go with what Toddy posted.

So if I'm reading the benchmarking websites I could run Skyrim at 50fps+ with that build? Is that right? I'm really not trying to keep up with all the new games at the moment. Just looking to play what I already have (some F2P mmos) and some older stuff I get cheap on steam.

Yeah it would be good for skyrim. The setup suggested by Toddy has a amazing value.

50FPS+?

Yeah. Although it's more like 60FPS locked with 4gb+ of higher resolution textures and substantially improved lighting effects.

My Skyrim runs at about 40-45FPS, and it's modified out the arse and barely looks like the same game. That setup will do the same or better.

Very strong setup, that. Would only be improved if you bought an SSD with it now, and a 1-2tb HDD when you get more money.

Remember, that's all new brand new hardware from newegg. Some slight changes for combo deals and some shopping around, maybe buying a good condition used case you like could save you a decent amount of money.
