The Cuphead Switch release is coming next month

The beloved but intensely difficult Cuphead came out in September 2017 on PC and Xbox One, to much acclaim and many broken controllers (from being smashed repeatedly against the wall). Now the game’s developer Studio MDHR is setting out to prove just how durable Nintendo Switch consoles are, not to mention Nintendo Switch players themselves, as a Cuphead Switch release has just been announced. The even better news is that it’s coming out in just a month’s time on April 18.

The announcement of Cuphead coming to Switch was revealed at Nintendo’s special Nindies showcase direct stream today. You can check out the delightful announcement trailer below, which takes a long time to reveal the main characters and even the actual game itself. Instead it’s filmed in live-action in black and white, and shows a man demonstrating the proper way to pour milk. He puts on his “face protector” (actually a mask that makes him look like the main villain of the game), and the milk he pours turns into the game’s main characters Cuphead and Mugman. Then there’s some footage of the game, played over a neat ’30s-style song about how Cuphead is coming to Switch, hooray.

The Cuphead Switch port will release on April 18 on Nintendo eShop, and is available to pre-purchase now for $19.99 USD / $25.99 CAD / £16.99 / 19,99€. “It’s no secret that Cuphead is a direct descendent of retro action games like Contra on the NES,” explained Studio MDHR Co-Director Chad Moldenhauer, “so it’s surreal to finally have one of our own games on a Nintendo system.”

In addition to this, there will be a big update for current owners of Cuphead on PC, Xbox One, and Mac. Studio MDHR detailed the changes coming to the game in its update here. These include being able to play as Mugman in single-player, new fully animated cutscenes, additional art and fight intros, 10 additional languages, many bug fixes, and “plenty of secrets for players to discover.” Intriguing.
