As it turns out, Electronic Arts knows their internet memes. For, in an advertising stint for their game Dante's Inferno, they performed a Rickroll.

On Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

According to The Escapist, Mr. Croshaw received a large crate from EA. Opening the crate revealed the words "The Fifth Circle of Hell is Close" written on the inside of the lid and the boxes contents: a burlap bundle with a peen hammer and safety goggles.

It also started a mechanism built into the crate that started the song.

Mr. Croshaw, upon realising that the device could not be stopped by merely shutting the lid, proceeded to tear the crate to pieces, until he found the mechanism and tore out the battery. Within the mechanism, there was a scroll that read:

"he sin of wrath is yours. You have succumbed to anger and opened an infernal spring that seethes with dark waters. Quelled not, your anger begot rage. The waters have risen unchecked and ye will be drowned in stinking mire.

Go to Hell."

Now, I'm wondering why they sent it to Yahtzee. Surely, if EA wanted to provoke anger, the AVGN would have been a more obvious choice. Don't get me wrong, it worked like a charm, but it just bugs me.

It sounds like EA put more effort into this box than they do with their games.

There's a video on destructoid of them breaking apart theirs.

Needless to say...It's very ... odd ... marketing.

They probably sent it to him because of his review of Mirror's Edge, in which he basically said no game made by EA will ever be good. I'm looking forward to Yahtzee's review of Dante's Inferno now.
