I will take this as an opportunity to say that I was accepted to medical school at The Ohio State University for the class of 2014. _________________

hey there FW! Long time no see. Well I trust?
Good to hear about your success with the ol' studies. When do you start? I suppose it's a 4 year affair? I'm studying law at the moment, so carrying the heavy load of academia myself. Bit bored of it tbh.
Haven't missed too much. Place has got a bit more tolerable these days than when you were here last, thankfully. _________________ Mr Lebezyatnikov, who keeps abreast of modern ideas, explained the other day that in our age even pity has been outlawed by science, and that in England, where they seem to be very keen on political economy, people are already acting accordingly. |

I actually brought this up during my interview at Ohio State when I was asked about my weaknesses. Like I told my interviewer, I've humbled tremendously over the years. Most of it is just getting older. I would say that I'm much different than I was four years ago when I started college. But working and volunteering in healthcare has a tendency to humble you as well. When you're not even a first-year medical student, even the nurses can pimp you, and no one wants you getting in their way.

Class of 2014 means that I will graduate in 2014 with my degree. It doesn't mean that I will start in 2014.

I'll start in August 2010. The MD degree is a four-year program, so if I pursue the traditional pathway, I will graduate in 2014. But after my second year of medical school, I'll have the option of taking a break from medical school and completing a PhD in a field of my choosing, which would increase the total timespan of the program by 3-4 years. After finishing my PhD, I would continue at year three of medical school. So I would graduate sometime around 2018 with two doctorates.
The advantage of having a PhD is that it prepares you much better for medical research and academic residency programs. Normal medical doctors are trained to be excellent clinicians but most of them don't have any expertise in scientific research. There are exceptions, of course, but the PhD is the best preparation that one can have to conduct translational research. The major downside is that taking a 3-4 year break between the second and third years of medical school can hamper your clinical skills and make getting back in the swing of things rather difficult. _________________

Sounds interesting. A double doctorate would be quite a badge of honour. Are you interested in pursuing the research side for your career, ultimately? Is there no way of doing the second PHD after instead of in the middle of your medical training? _________________ Mr Lebezyatnikov, who keeps abreast of modern ideas, explained the other day that in our age even pity has been outlawed by science, and that in England, where they seem to be very keen on political economy, people are already acting accordingly. |
