Well, i've finally gone through my second laptop and i couldn't be bothered using the faggot things anymore.
According to insurance, i have $2240AUD to spend.

For this build, it has to be fast for general use (think, encoding some .mp4 videos occasionally, music running in the background 24/7..etc), but specifically it has to be RELIABLE. This will be used as a torrent box, so it has to be able to take relatively high loads for gaming, and yet be able to clock itself down and go into a cool, idle-style mode for torrenting.

The current list of parts i was thinking of;
Case: Lian Li Armorsuit PC-P50 (Plus some lights, intake fan, fan controller..etc.)
PSU: Corsair HX-750
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3P
CPU: Intel Core i5 750 (Will run at..3ghz?)
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD5850 (1gb)
HDDs: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (1tb) + WD Green (500gb)
Mem: Kingston HyperX KHX12800D3K3
[$1855AUD]

So..what do you guys think?
The 'cuda will be the secondary HDD, whereas the green will be the main (going with the torrent box idea here)..

Anything i should change?
Not too sure on that RAM..

I think it looks good. Are you really gonna need to have space to pirate two and a half terabytes of stuff though? I think if you drop something in the hard drive space you'll have the extra money to up your RAM.

The 5850 is outperformed by the GTX 295...But it's also DX 11. And likely cheaper so yeah, I say thumbs up on that GPU. Why not get a more high performance HD for the main like the WD Black or something?

And yeah, the GTX295 does outperformance it, but it's $220 more, without DX11.

Basically, as i have it planned, when it's in torrent or idle or movie mode, it will only be running the 1 HDD - the WD Green.
I know it's not the highest performance drive, but that's the point.. It's meant to use low energy and produce little heat.

Also, keepit, i have $250 worth of play room if i need to upgrade the ram, without touching the HDDs..
And 1.5tb is something nice to have. At least i will never have to worry about running out of space.

Ahh gotcha. Good thinking. Newb question but how exactly do you put it in "torrent mode"?

I'd upgrade to 6gb ram if you have the finances to do so.

I complete agree on the GPU. That would be my main reason for choosing the 5850 as well.

'Torrent' mode means that, say, on a laptop you'd put it in 'battery saver' which stops the CPU clocking up, clocks the GPU down and will only run the HDD it has to.
Basically, the same can be done on desktops with 'power saver' which does the exact same thing, but without the battery meter.

Why 6gb of RAM?
Tri-channel style?
how about Kingston HyperX?

Ahh okay so it's basically just a more power efficient way to go on a desktop. Gotcha!

I said 6GB only because it seems you were thinking of doing some encoding videos and TBH, I'm not sure how accurate this is anymore, but I figured another 2GB would always make encoding a little bit nicer....But...Then again, you are going to be running an i5, not some Phenom 9600. I wasn't really thinking of the tri channel setup for anything other than that because, unless it's changed since the i7s came out, there isn't too much of a boost from dual channel to tri channel mode from my understanding. I was just thinking for a small bit of performance gain.

Not just power efficient, but - specifically - less heat. Cooler components = longer lasting components..

Well, between the 4gb of Dual channel, and 6gb of Kingston Tri channel, there is $15aud - so i'm gonna go with that anyway. Performance boost will be negligible with Windows 7, but i suppose it may come in handy later, such as when running Crysis & iTunes at the same time.

Now, guys, harder decision;
I can either have this desktop as shown,
or,
http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/X500

Personally, i'm leaning towards the Qosmio.
Yes, i f****** hate laptops, but having that sort of power while still being able to move it around is damn tempting.
Plus, i've always loved the look and sound of the Qosmios..
Those speakers are ridiculously good.

That laptop's sweet, i'm pretty sure a gts250 can't handle Crysis how'd you want though. It is a pretty processor-heavy game, but.. I'm guessing you could get in the 30-40 fps range on High with a few things on Medium. That's just my experience with the 250.

Yeah, it's not the best GPU out there, but like you said - it will do quite well.
Besides, i don't bother with Crysis anymore. Sure, it looks great, but eh.
A true benchmark i think is more like Far Cry 2, which i should be able to run at about 40FPS on Very High with that laptop.

Sigh.
Probably gonna buy the laptop now.
I hate laptops so much, but i just can't resist that thing.

Will remember all the components posted here, because once i get a job i'll save up and buy the desktop.
