Yesterday, while cleaning up my media center, I found my copy of Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus, which I bought sometime before Christmas last year. I had been pretty excited about this game pre-release, what with it being the first "traditional", albeit shorter than usual,...

12 years a slave & Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter..and Spring

Both very good movies. Drew me in instantly.

The latter was beautifully made using very little dialogue to tell the story and using all kinds of buddhist symbols and images.

Speaking of....

3.5 out of 5

This is based purely on an enjoyment factor. If I were to look at this movie critically the score would be lower. Likely 3 or 2.5 stars. It was entertaining. I wanted a violent, nonsense film with lots of action and it delivered. The pacing was inconsistent and the lead actor is not near as charismatic as pre rom-com purgatory Gerard Butler but it delivered. The 3D effects were quite good as well.

Side note: Eva Green was making some pretty creepy sex faces. Hopefully they were intentional.

4.5 out of 5

Philomena was actually pretty enjoyable. It was a nice change of pace from the comedies and action films I've been stuck on lately. The performances were pretty well done and Steve Coogan surprised me. Philomena tells a pretty sad, unfortunate tale but it isn't a punch a hole in your heart depressing like the Road or anything. I'd recommend it if you're into dramas.

I kind of want to see the new 300 simply because Salamis is my favorite battle of the second Greco Persian war.

I watched The Rum Diary over the weekend. Basically Jack Sparrow turned journalist in the 60s. Not horrible, but meh...

That movie really confused me. I heard it was based on a Hunter S. Thompson book, so I figured Johnny Depp was reprising his role as Hunter S. Thompson from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. And that's what I thought for most of the movie, until someone calls him John, or Jack or something. Then I find out that The Rum Diary was a fictional account about a hard-drinking American journalist living in Puerto Rico, written by Thompson when he was a hard-drinking American journalist living in Puerto Rico, and the studio got the same person who played Thompson to play the Thompson surrogate.

I hope I wasn't the only person who got confused by this.

Well, most storytellers tell the same story over and over. Their story.

As a day 1 fan of the tv show, I was super excited to see this with the wife. This was more of the same. But after 8 years that was a welcome thing. I'll give 4/5.

Going in I told the wife we would probably be the median age. I was wrong. There were a lot of 50 plusers.

I have a feeling I'm going to get dragged to see that. Was never a huge fan of the show, but it is still a lot of fun usually.

Really fun movie filled with a lot of humor and intrigue. For me the sad thing is that it left itself open for a sequel, when what I really want is the series to come back.

I've always thought of watching the TV show just because of Kirsten Bell.

But as for movies, I'll be in Omaha for work next week so I'll get to see The Grand Budapest Hotel. Pretty excited.

Inside Llewyn Davis

This is the latest one from the Coen brothers. It follows a week or so in the life of a starving artist in the folk music scene of NYC in the early 1960s. Probably not for everyone, but has the same memorable characters and dry wit the Coens are known for, plus some great musical performances. I enjoyed it immensely.

The Coens make three kinds of movies (with a fair amount of overlap between genres): Comedies about idiots in over their heads, dark thrillers about unsavory characters, and quiet movies about regular people down on their luck. This one is solidly in the third camp.

the old lady made me watch Holes last night..

not bad, for kids - pretty entertaining and great appearances by named actors. Still a kids movie though.

4/5

Watched The Dark Knight Rises again. This time with my new TV. LED is so much more colorful and LCD. Best investment I made and still have money to spend, but I'm saving it for backup money.

Saw two today.

First was Olympus Has Fallen.

What. A. Piece. Of. Shit. Without exaggerating this is was one the worst movies I've ever seen. This movie is a case study in ham fisted propaganda.

It's so stupid and so full of plot holes that I actually got angry watching it because I was wondering if was intentionally trying to be so stupid or if it just didn't know any better. I'm sure there must've been a few superpatirots out there who, along with the bald eagle porn they watch, got off on this and used their stars n stripes hanky to clean up afterwards, but man, was this movie bad. 0/5.

Second was Frozen.

As a father, I have a certain loathing for Disney but this movie would up being a surprise.
When we started up the movie, the cynical side of me instantly thought, "Oh look, they are cashing in on the popularity of Tangled by having the same kind of look to the characters.", but I think this movie is superior to that one in every way.

If you like musicals you will like it. If you have kids they will like it and it isn't that bad to sit through as the movie moves along pretty quick and is well written and they got some talented singers instead of the usual pop-star-of-the-week. All in all I'd say 3.5/5

Interestingly enough, Flynn and Rapunzel are there when they first reopen the gates!

just sayin.
