So much more than war...
By shandog137

The recent blog, Peace in the Era of Call of Duty  really made me think about war games that dig deeper than simply a kill streak reward. The first game that came to mind was Spec-Ops: The Line and although I haven’t played it, I began to wonder if it did the war genre as...

Dan what's your early take on it. I see what you're playing.

I just finished. Anything specific you want to know? Review should go up tonight or tomorrow early.

Combat is really fun, but extremely tense, difficult, and totally brutal.

Did the inventory system and management end up being as cool looking as the videos make it look.

Does it get annoying trying to pull a weapon from you bag while something is attacking you?

Inventory is kind of cool. You can get an upgrade to "holster" more guns so that you don't have to pull them out of your backpack which takes time while monsters and enemies are running around. Supplies come in different amounts, but to craft an item you need to have picked up more than just one scissor or tape or alcohol for whatever you're trying to make. Basically it doesn't feel like you have an unlimited supply on you, though if you scavenge a lot and stock up a bunch you'll do fine over the course of the game.

Annoying? Basically when that happened I just felt stupid. You know how people constantly reload in FPS games? That's me, but constantly reloading in this game meant checking every equipped weapon, loading the three or four rounds I had in, switching to crafting and trying to make whatever I could out of my supplies.

It's like a punishment. You start to get so good at preparing yourself for battle, but sometimes engagements can sneak up on you or you just don't have a fucking thing on you and you're screwed. The inventory and stuff feels great.

Straightforward but difficult question: is The Last of Us the best PS3 exclusive to-date?

Hard to say. The PS3 has had a lot of amazing exclusives. It's certainly the best in recent memory. GoW: Ascension didn't really do it... but think of all the games the PS3 has. When you play it, I'll ask if it's better than MGS4. >Razz

Well MGS4 is my 3rd favorite game of all time because it concluded 10 years of gaming for me. TLOU is starting on a clean slate. I think the obvious comparison will be between TLOU and Uncharted 2.

The Last of Us makes Uncharted 2 seem like garbage.

This is one of the main reasons why I'm getting this game. Naughty Dog did amazing with the Uncharted series and absolutely enjoyed them. Can't wait until the game releases. I won't be able to play it the Friday it releases, but I will be able to enjoy it that Saturday.

I'm much more interested in how the gameplay works than the story. I was really kinda "Eh, I'll get it eventually" about it until I heard about the backpack thing.

Is the gameplay a lot of "Kill a wave, move on" or does it flow naturally?

It flows very naturally. If you're too set in your ways and say "I'm going to kill everyone before I move past this" then it can feel like wave after wave.

I enjoyed combat far too much though, so even when I knew more enemies would flood in, I just saddled up with my shotgun and blasted people. There's a point in the story... well I won't talk about that, but suffice it to say a "successful" combat encounter feels great.

Focus testing doesn't mean much if the focus testers are bad.

Cough, Fuse, cough.

Fuse most certainly did not have the same "focus testing" that The Last of Us or Halo 4 had. I'm talking about thousands of dollars spent parading people through 8-hour gameplay days, over and over tweaking lighting and level lay out and damage and supplies until it's juuuuuuust right.

This is such an important part of making a good game.

I believe this and Dark Souls are the only two PS3 games I will have picked up on release day.

Maybe it's just me but I bet they put Joel's love interest in the game to prevent it becoming really weird.
