The perils of the Hype Train…

The recent release of Evolve and The Order 1886 really got me to thinking about the disparity between the perspective of sales-driven publishers and the quality-driven purchases of consumers. The “Hype Train” is nothing new, but the way it is utilized has been creating far more...

Alex and I were talking earlier today about how the Wii U needs a price drop the way the 3DS needed one. Will we see a price drop at E3 to combat the new consoles? What's the best price for a Wii U with all the mario games etc coming out this holiday?

I say $250. If the rumors about ps4 and next xbox prices are to be believed, that would put the Wii U at HALF the price of any other next-gen console, making it pretty much irresistible to a parent on Black Friday.

Apart from the touchscreen joypad, it's a current gen console. And thus I feel it should be valued as so.

120GB PS3 on Amazon is about £150, which is $220. So I reckon your $250 is probably about right!

If rumers are true and microsoft will be selling their console for $500(without sub) and $300(With sub) then I would say the wiiu would need a price drop down to $200

It really is about the perceive initial buy in price for a large amount of people.

Let's be realistic about this. Obviously it won't be $99.

Do you think it'll still need a pack-in game like NintendoLand at that price?

I would say yes. Im not sure if it has to be that game specifically. But wary buyers really like that they can spend money only buying the console for now and it comes with a free game. Should probably be a good good game to make them want to try other games.

Nintendo targets to a specific audience though. Im not sure how much parents thinks consoles should cost these days. As long as its in that price range I imagine the wiiu will do just as well as any Nintendo device.

Does the WiiU have any must have games yet? I know on the podcast you mentioned that you didn't have anything you really wanted to play on it.

It should be $10 more for each title it has, starting at $0 of course.

Someone said in a comment that $250 would be the sweet spot for the system right now with Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 just around the corner, along with the Wind Waker HD update. I think that's juuuuuuuust right, but only if it came with a pack-in title like NintendoLand and the hard drive, not the "Basic" set.
