Well, 2012 is coming to an end. And so let's look back at some of the best movies of this year as voted by you.
But first some honourable mentions…
#15 Perks of Being a Wallflower – 6 points
#14 Seven Psychopaths, Chronicle & Wrech it Ralph – 8 points
#13 Paranorman, Brave & Seeking a Friend for the End of the World – 12 points
#12 Les Miserable – 14 points
#11 Django Unchained & The Raid: Redemption – 18 points

The Cabin in the Woods 20 points
Coming in at #10 is one of those movies that will just make you go WTF? On the surface it may look like your run of the mill horror flick we’ve seen again and again and again. But at its core is a film that’s darkly comedic, bloody satisfying and… well to say anymore would spoil it. But it’s truly unlike any other horror film that came out this year, possibly ever.

I cannot tell a lie, I did not see this movie. No wait, George Washington said that. Anyway, with a 91% rating at Rotten Tomatoes let’s see what they have to say.

Ted 24 points
Wanna party like the 80’s? Apparently all you need to do is bang a lot of girls named Stephanie. “Ted” asks what happens when a children’s toy that comes alive eventually grows up? The answer is a hilarious stoner buddy (Seth MacFarlane) who is preventing John Bennett (Mark Whalberg) from becoming a responsible adult. Ted has a lot of laughs but there is also a lot of heart regarding friendship VS responsibility. If you’re a fan of Family Guy there are a few eater eggs you may pick up on that relate to the show, but all in all it’s a great ride for anyone looking for a laugh.

Skyfall 28 points
It’s friggin Bond, James friggin Bond. Nuff said? No? Well Daniel Craig has proven that Bond will never die and has played him so well many people consider him second to the legendary Sean Connery. IMO Skyfall was not as good as Casino Royale, but who cares, this is the best of 2012 list and Skyfall was a damn good movie (even if these movies changed the famous gunshot opening from the beginning of the movie to the end /bondnerdrage).

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 30 points
Gandalf is back, and he’s coming at you at 48 FPS. The Lord of the Rings was epic. Actually, I don’t recall a movie ever being called “epic” until Lord of the Rings. And epic is still a good word, don’t get all cray about it. The Hobbit was a fantastic journey through Middle Earth that begins a new trilogy in Tolkien’s universe. The Lord of the Rings movies just seemed to get better and better and considering how good An Unexpected Journey was, I have high hopes the next two will get more and more…….epic.

Looper 32 points
Bruce Willis never turns down a movie, but when you’re in Looper nothing else matters. Probably the most mind-blowing action picture of the year, Looper tells a futuristic tale where time travel is illegal and on the black market. When the mafia want to whack someone, they send them 30 years into the past where a hired gun called a looper awaits. But when the looper Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is greeted by his future-self (Bruce Willis) things get a little crazy. As smart as it is action packed, Looper was one of my favourite films this year and I’m happy to see GR vote it so high.

Moonrise Kingdom 36 points
Wes Anderson is an incredible filmmaker who has made some exception movies, and a quirky, whimsical love story straight from the heart is no different. Moonrise Kingdom sets itself in 1965 where two 12 years fall in love, run away together and are tracked by various authorities from an all-star cast. The story is cleverly told with the usual smart charm and attention to detail found in Anderson’s previous works. But most importantly it’s a film that should make you smile.

Prometheus 42 points
Ridley Scott returns to the Alien franchise he created with a (sort-of) prequel involving a mythology behind the origins of mankind. Prometheus is a fascinating, yet frustrating film that won’t answer some of its bigger questions. However it’s a haunting and brilliant piece of sci-fi horror with a terrific performance from Michael Fassbender who plays the android David. Ridley Scott meant to bring wonder and terror back to the summertime popcorn season, and Prometheus succeeded in that regard.

The Dark Knight Rises 50 points
AKA The God Damn Batman. Many fans wondered how Nolan would ever be able to top 2008’s The Dark Knight.Some will say the end of the trilogy is not as good as its middle chunk, but that certainly doesn’t make it a bad movie. In fact it’s the second best movie on GR. Nolan’s Batman films are set in a very real setting, void of any superhuman villains and alien races. For Nolan, Gotham is a real place, as real as it can possibly get for a movie about a masked vigilante. The realism and clever style from TDKR immersed us all as we saw his idea of Gotham come to a close. Some say it lived up to the hype, others say it didn’t, but it was a God Damn good movie.

The Avengers 62 points
Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, that guy from The Hurt Locker, and Samuel L Motherfucking Jackson team up and kick some ass in the year’s most entertaining film by far. It’s outlandish, it’s funny, it’s intense, it’s eye candy, it’s everything you could expect plus some HULK SMASH. With five films leading up to The Avengers, one had to wonder just how this would live up to the hype. The answer is Joss Whedon. Whedon not only understands these characters but he knows how to even out the screen time between each superhero, something that was lacking in the early X-Men films. The Avengers feels like a team and it’s the most fun I had this summer. Congrats for it being the #1 film on GR.

I'm an Anderson fan and a huge Bill Murray fan, but I thought Moonrise Kingdom was poorly written. It's a visual masterpiece -- absolutely stunning. you could literally screen cap pieces of film and hang it on your wall.
But that story was lame.
What a waste of a great fucking cast.
I do appreciate his vision, though. It's nice to see this story as told from from his perspective because, as said, it's visually stunning. innocence and love; adventuring with your soul mate; age is nothing but a number.. i get all of that. Everyone's saying, "i wish i could've done that at that age, with my true love." And that's great. It's the film's only redeeming quality, actually. But parts of this movie, man... The whole affair angle between Willis' character and the wife feels tacked on when you see the outcome, like it was only a plot device for an ending. Nothing is fleshed out, it's a basket of bits and pieces. a very pretty basket. Easter basket, even.
The film looks like watercolor painting come to life, but p.u. does the script ever blow.
this one hurts, but hey, at least it did make me smile. |

TDKR is my #1 if you cut off the 'christian bale never dies' ending, with the avengers a close 2nd.
3rd would be Lawless, which is an awesome movie despite shia labeouf. Probably because of Tom Hardy, who i have a total bro crush on. I want to buy him and chris hemsworth a beer and talk about cars and footy and shit.

It's a solid--if not surprising--list. 2012 really was the year of the nerd-friendly blockbuster.
Anyone got any ideas how "GR's top 10 films of 2012" might look in, oh, say, six months time when everyone gets to catch up on DVD? I think Cloud Atlas would find a place. I know a lot of people didn't see it (myself included), but it looks like it has the markings of a future cult classic. I'm looking forward to it on DVD.

Which I thought was shocking since we're bigger film lovers than Siskel and Ebert. But then I remembered you had a daughter this year which probably left little time for new movies.

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...
