So much more than war...
By shandog137

The recent blog, Peace in the Era of Call of Duty  really made me think about war games that dig deeper than simply a kill streak reward. The first game that came to mind was Spec-Ops: The Line and although I haven’t played it, I began to wonder if it did the war genre as...

You know I'd still use XP, if I had the choice.

Same here but it's 12 years old. That will be like using Windows 2.0 instead of Windows 98. Then again, I did spent a couple hours making Windows 7 look like Windows 95/98.

Windows 7 is perfect.

Although i'm still waiting on a black-edition style torrent for it. Windows XP black is the shit.

I wouldn't say windows 7 is perfect and windows 8 has a few improvements. Is it worth paying to upgrade though? Fuck no.

XP doesn't have dx10 or dx11 for gamers.

That's about the only real reason I can find.

I still run xp on 3 of my old pcs in the house.

Not really. There's really isn't a reason to upgrade if you're not a PC gamer.

There's a nice incentive to not upgrade if you're a sound guy.
Windows XP can output sound to 2 things at once, Windows Vista/7 and i think 8 cannot.

Do you know when it'll be back? I need to uninstall the freeware you suggested to me when it's available.

Sorry, double post. Adding on to what was mentioned.
Quote:
PCs today are evolving for a world of mobile computing where people interact with their devices through touch, and we designed Windows 8 for this. But we also recognize there are many non-touch devices in use today – especially in the commercial setting. As such we’ve focused on a number of improvements to ensure easier navigation for people using a mouse and keyboard.

We’ve improved the way you navigate to Start with the mouse by changing the Start “tip” to be the familiar Windows logo. The new tip appears anytime you move the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, and is always visible on the taskbar when on the desktop. There are also options to change what the corners do, and options to boot into alternate screens. For example, if you prefer to see the Apps view versus all the tiles, you can choose to have the Start screen go directly to Apps view.

I can output sound to two different devices on 7/8. Like I run my game audio through my stereo speakers sometimes while running voicechat through my headphones. Or running game audio through my surround headphones while playing music on my stereo speakers. My stereo speakers act as a usb sound device.

Im not sure ive ever tried running a single sound source through two devices at once.

It is true that after xp Microsoft switched away from a straight hardware accelerated sound. Other than in very specific circumstances most people wont be able to tell.

Judging from the first version of Windows ME, Windows Vista, and Windows 8. Then looking at Windows 98 SE, XP, and 7. I'd say Windows 9 is going to be amazing. I'd say Microsoft shot themselves in the foot by making XP too good.

It's just the typical cycle. It has a crappy OS then an amazing one. XP and 7 are the best consumer-side OS' of all-time imo.

Idk if I would have so much faith in Windows 9. Microsoft seems really determined to force its way into tablet and phone markets. Forcing PC users to eat a tablet interface they didn't want.

I want to hope they learned the lesson and will not bite the pc users but we are talking about microsoft here.

Yep, exactly why I am skipping windows 8 entirely (even though I thought windows 98 was fine, windows ME was the first horrible one that started the cycle).

It seems like the middle OS is just a huge beta test for the next OS. Windows 9 will probably come in desktop and tablet editions.
