Finally Broke My Crowdfunding Rule
By oblivion437
Posted on 01/12/15
I've had a long-standing rule to avoid getting involved in any sort of crowdfunded activities.  I didn't donate to Shadowrun or Wasteland, but I did buy and enjoy both of them (I'm plugging both of those games right now, just so you know they're good).  I haven't...

You can pick up a 120gb SSD for about $60us and tons of laptops are now coming with msata/m.2 drives preinstalled.

This is an everybody problem dude.

5-10% performance loss and heavy wear on SSDs, yeah welcome to modern gaming friends.

So I was skimming through that thread and it seems a good number of people there are saying the claim is bullshit.

From what I'm reading, this new drm is hardly a drm in the true sense of something like securom.

This is coming from someone who has a pretty intense dislike of drm, but it seems like without more proof, these claims don't really hold up..

Of course, I may just be trying to justify this to myself because I really want to play DA:I and it may be the game that gets me to be a hypocrite and break down and get origin. If I wasn't so busy in WoW right now I'd probably have it already, but will probably pick it up this weekend

That's because they're being pedantic.

It's not as drastic as initially made out to be, but it does do a disturbingly heavy amount of read/writes for no reason. Only tiny little bits at a time which is why people are acting like it's not a big deal, not really understanding that size doesn't matter.
Seems to be less of a problem on dragon age at the moment, so maybe since the initial implementations they've fixed it a bit.
And yeah, wear leveling will help but it's still wear that shouldn't need to be done. It's not like this will do anything, there's no DRM system ever made that cannot be cracked.

It's all over the internets, the reddit link was simply the best written up at the time.

I run both lords of the fallen and DA:I on my raid0 ssds and I can tell you they are just making up outrage over the DRM.
DA:I doesn't experience any of the performance issues lords of the fallen has and doesn't exhibit any bottleneck do to the new type of DRM.

The DRM is actually the best implementation of DRM we have seen yet.

Not that I want DRM in my game anyways. Rolling Eyes

Considering I have yet to play the game, and I refuse to pay (if I wasn't broke I may consider paying... maybe) I would say the DRM is successful. About 2 weeks since release and still no crack.

Give it time.
Took them a bit to figure out securom, this'll be cracked within 12 months.

Dragon Age Inquisition has been cracked. Lasted just over 3 weeks. Will EA eventually remove the DRM? There are some who still report that it is causing performance issues.

Judging by these ridiculous load times, it isnt the drm that causes all of the excessive harddrive access.
