So much more than war...

The recent blog, Peace in the Era of Call of Duty  really made me think about war games that dig deeper than simply a kill streak reward. The first game that came to mind was Spec-Ops: The Line and although I haven’t played it, I began to wonder if it did the war genre as...

Anyone played/heard of this? Was released on Tuesday and damn it's difficult.

Created by one man development studio http://www.shiningrocksoftware.com/, take a small group of settlers, a few resources and see what town you can create.

Think of it as a more micromanging settlers game. Except (in my couple of games so far) everyone ends up dying of starvation.

Good fun and pisses all over Simcity's chips.

I'll be downloading it soon. A really interesting take on city-building genre.

I've played about 90 minutes today, 20-30 of that being tutorial probably.

It's so tough! I think I just doomed my town because I forgot all about stone. Ran out of stone completely and all construction stopped. I had about 13 people die in the third winter, mostly children, and now I'm struggling to regroup. Halted all construction of anything too far away, tore down the school (muahaha), and am now super focused on getting a crop planted before spring.

Having less mouths to feed is nice but, shit. I killed like eight kids. Sad

Third town is going better, up to 100+ adults/20+ student/30+children.

Having a market helps quite a lot I think. Collects food/resources from all over and it saves adults time as children can get the food.

Now I've got this far it does feel like I need something else to build but that's where mods will come in. Just waiting for the next disaster.

Uh, just had a fire that wiped out most of the buildings in my town. Ended up with around 100 people homeless and everyone in town without tools. My stockpile of 10000 food disappeared. Thankfully only lost around 7-8 people to starvation (more died of old age during that period).

Managed to rally and five years on, have most buildings rebuilt and food production going again. Still half the townsfolk are without tools.

This kind of game totally scares me though.

Yeah responsibility is truly the gamer's kryptonite.

I like city builders like Tropico, where the only threat is you. I mean, that's already a big enough threat.
