Where I live, there is only one ISP. That's how it is in the US. There are very few markets with multiple options. Right now, it's the threat of another competitor opening up shop that keeps prices down. Google currently has the most aggressive stance on speed and usage so it's the best *possible* option. Is it possible that google just takes over and we're all screwed and we do end up working in salt mines?

No, for some reason I don't see that happening in the present moment, but that company has so many engineers I wouldn't be surprised if one was developing Google Salt. "Add a little to your search!"

That's the reason why I have Comcast. There's Verizon as well, but I'm pretty sure I don't get FiOS in my area.
