The perils of the Hype Train…

It's a really great game. You're a rebel if you don't get it for that cheap. Expect a visit from the secret police.

I was tempted to check the game out before but I saw this and has some reservations:

Quote:
Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: One or more products in this package may use the 3rd party DRM Requires a free Kalypso account.

Is the DRM they are talking about registering an account? Or is it something else on top of that?

Matters to me. Any type of securom extra drm nonsense on a game that already has drm (steam) or just in general is an automatic no sale to me. I don't give a shit how good it is.

Iunno, i just crack everything anyway in case the DRM slows it down. GTA4 is an excellent example, you can pick up a good 5fps.

You start the game from Steam, the launcher loads, you click login -> play, and then you're playing Tropico. It's like some kind of voodoo.

Gee, thanks. Didn't know it was that hard to get an answer to a simple, harmless question around here instead of getting smarmy, smug, douche-y replies. (excluding madster)

Stay classy bros.

How exactly does DRM affect frame rate? Just curious.

Most likely by hogging processing power, or connection dips causing lag.

Some particularly shit examples have been known to massively eat processor power, which alone makes them horrible but especially in games that require the CPU, like anything using non-GPU PhysX. That's not talking about the games that have problems with micro-stuttering or anything else either, purely something you can see with your own eyes. I'm convinced a good part of the pathetic optimization of modern games has to do with utterly useless DRM measure.

That's without mentioning the lost power of having all those programs run in the background. I hate using steam for that reason, chewing up large amounts of valuable SSD space and tying up CPU and RAM, for what? So i can have a stupid little fucking pop-up everytime somebody alt+tabs?
Now imagine having Origin or Uplay running over the top of that, possibly with SecuROM running over THAT.
This is all talking framerate too. Have fun playing an online game with 2x different useless turds in the background eating up your bandwidth.

That's why DRM is shit and it's why my copies of The Witcher have been un-steamified over the top of their un-DRMing. Look at The Witcher 2 for an excellent example of how DRM fucks it up for everybody, people were having massive framerate problems and suddenly when the DRM was patched out, hey look it runs absolutely perfectly. What an odd coincidence.
