The only thing that stops the dust is the rain. It’s a sweet reprieve, but there is no middle ground. The land is either as dry as the Betty Ford clinic, or as wet as the ocean floor. Everything can be seen from the ridge overlooking Armadillo as John Marston gently bounces along atop...

That bloody 3TB HDD that's been sitting around my place for ages now? I stopped being so lazy and I finally installed the damn thing.

I reckon when I receive my next pay, I'll go ahead and order myself a GTX 1060. Like I've said before, I wanna play most games at a high/max setting, at 1080p, 60 FPS. I don't need 4K and I'm not doing VR.

In the near future, I'll be ordering an SSD... which I'll be at some stage then attempting to reinstall Windows on.

I think I am going to be upgrading soon. A lot of VR games are not optimized and my 5 year old 3770k gets high frame-rates but the minimum frame-rates are low enough to cause reprojection in VR.

We will see if I can afford to squeeze a Samsung m.2 into my budget.

Did you ever order a new video card?

Nah man, not yet. I'd like to order a new card but lately, my partner and I have been hit pretty hard with some unavoidable bills.

Car service/repairs - $660 AUD
Phone bill - $150 (went over data by accident, shit)
Car registration for twelve months - $820
Car repayment (the new car my partner and I got at the end of 2015) - $500

My partner needs to have a root canal and crown placement dental procedure done on one of her teeth... so in total, that's $3,000 ($1,400 for the root canal, $1,600 for the crown). We're going halves on that and we have private health cover so... I'm gonna assume we'll both be down $1,200 or $1,300 each?

So... yeah. No PC upgrades yet. It's shitty but at the end of the day, it's just life, it is what it is. We'll be fine.

When I do upgrade, I'm looking at getting an ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 Turbo 6GB - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/36257/asus-geforce-gtx-1060-turbo-6gb

Picked a good time, Ryzen prices just got announced and they're incredible. Same IPC as broadwell-e, the 1600X, 6 core / 12 thread, 16mb of cache and dynamic overclocking up to or above 4ghz is looking to go for under $275. Insane bang/buck.

Why's your shit so high, man? I'm on optus 4G with unlimited talk/text with 3gb of data for $40/mnth and 1gb after is another $10.
You locked into a contract or can you see if they can do better?

Check amazon before you buy anything, you can get an EVGA for about $40 less right now, and amazon shipping from the US is damn fast these days.

My mobile plan is $100 a month, with Telstra, contract. It's for a Samsung Galaxy 7, which gives me unlimited calls, text and 10GB of month per data. I had a higher than normal bill because I accidentally went over the data limit. I've never done that before so yeah, shit.

I'm with Telstra because up here in Darwin, Optus and especially Vodaphone have pretty shitty reception. Sometimes when I go away for work in remote location, Telstra is the only thing out there.

I know, right? Australia's mobile planning is so backwards. Our Internet in general is backwards.

Thanks, politics!

Everyone I know pays out the bunghole for mobile data. Our household only gets 3GB of data per month (I don't use any of it) and it always gets used up.

Your plan seems much less expensive than ours, Mr. 10GB of month.

I'm thinking of upgrading my motherboard, ram, SSD, cpu, cooler, and fans. Maybe I should try for a 7700K overclocked to 5ghz? I'm still rockin that old 3770k OC 4.4GHZ and some dog ass slow ddr3 ram.(Due to a motherboard switch and xmp not working)

I feel pretty sketch about delidding the 7700k even with the new easy tools you can buy. Maybe that is something I will try after a year but for now I think I'm just going to toss some really beefy cooling on it.

A lot of VR games are not optimized and even use old versions of unity and unreal engine. I don't usually find I am GPU limited so what I hope is that with 5ghz I will be able to just brute force my minimum fps up.

I pulled the trigger today due to newegg putting some of my parts on sale. I ended up saving $100.

Intel 7700k
32GB of DDR4
Samsung 512GB 960 Pro NVME SSD
MSI Z270 SLI PLUS MB
A80 280MM liquid cooler
3 more Noctua 140MM PWM fans

and with some of that money I saved I bought a
Rocket 88 Delidding kit
Liquid Metal CLU
Thermal grizzly kryonaut thermal paste

Going to check for stability and then delid the 7700k and try to OC it to 5GHZ and beyond! I'll post pictures as it happens.

Gotta go fast for VR!

My HD 7850 has crashed multiple times now.

My 8GB of RAM acts like it's 512MB.

My computer will always crash if I try to put it to sleep without leaving a browser window open and idling it for one minute prior.

Sounds like you have some bad ram. Are you going to upgrade?

Anyone else doing upgrades?

I'll probably pick up a 1600X, board and 16gb of DDR4 in a few months once stock/prices are stable.

Favorite part about noctua is that they'll post me some new mounting hardware for my CPU cooler.

Awesome! I would love to compare game benchmarks with you dude. I think I made the right decision based on what I need it for but it is always nice to see great competition. We should make an AMD/Intel battle thread. Cool

One of the things amd really tried to sell was that the new multicore chips (More than 4) are meant for streaming and encoding. My old PC will have my capture card in it and will also be my editing rig so I don't see much benefit in that sense because I already offload all of that work. I want that 5.2GHZ for unoptimized VR games.

Wow that is hella cool of them! I have owned a bunch of different fans and the noctua pwm fans are the best. I'm going to be running a 280mm rad in push pull with all noctua 140mm fans in order to try to control noise. One extra 140mm in the back as exhaust.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my USB controller on my Motherboard can't take VR very well and I loose half of my usb ports sometimes. I had to resort to buying two pci express USB cards. One to plug my Vive into and the other I have running audio. Really looking forward to getting rid of that mess.

Yeah, we'll need to wait and see what the ryzen chips overclock like. I honestly don't expect too much, simply because with the extra cores comes extra power needed, i wouldn't be surprised to see them drawing 150w once they get decent cooling.

Still though, i'll be happy with 4.0-4.2ghz with 6 cores which is looking fairly achievable, my 480 isn't powerful enough to make the CPU the limiting factor and i won't be going VR until they're wireless, i'm mainly upgrading for the newer board features anyway.

Yeah, love noctua. After using other shit in the past where trying to run them at lower voltages makes them whine or having annoying sound profiles (frequency is more important than decibels), i finally decided to stop screwing around anymore and just went full noctua all round, 2x 140 on the front running 7v and 1x 120 in the rear at 12v. Best choice i've ever made, loudest part of my computer is the drives.

My absolute favorite part about them, though, is definitely my U14S. It's the only CPU cooler i've found so far with a mounting system that is actually good, my previous one before it was a be quiet dark rock and i was getting 60-70c temps under load just because i couldn't get the turd to mount correctly, and the fact that noctua will send me out a kit this delicious looking for free completely justifies the extra money they cost.
