Today the Daily Manifesto takes on the Shinobii Console Tool Kit, a boon to anyone who has discovered that it takes the entire cast of Ocean's Eleven to get inside their Xbox 360.
"But Duke," you ask, "what possible legal reason could you have for wanting to open up your Xbox 360?"
Actually, I did have to do that once. We had a 360 debug unit (a special 360 that can play preview builds) and the DVD drive on it broke. Specifically, it was actually carving a groove into any DVD we put in it. A little research turned up that it was a $30 Hitachi drive, and I thought it would be an easy fix.
That was not the case. See that weird white piece of metal with the square holes in it? I basically had to replicate that by cutting up a couple credit cards in order to get inside.
However this kit also has all the crazy little star, triwing, hex drivers and other non-standard tools needed to get inside just about any console or cellphone out there. Want to mod your Wii and turn it into a SNES? You need this kit.
The full list of consoles this sucker can crack is: DS, DS Lith, DSi, Gameboy, Gamecube, N64, SNES Nintendo carts, PS2, PS3, PSP, PSP 2000, PSP 3000, Xbox 360, Xbox, and Wii.
The case is rugged, and the tools seem quite well made. It's $30, so you wouldn't pick one up "just in case", but if you're planning on opening up any console at all, for any reason, this kit seems like a no-brainer to me.
Oh and it's Haiku Friday! Last week's winner is NoFundamentalist. As usual, pm Blake with your address to get your prize.
This week's prize is a brand new, sealed, mint, in-box copy of Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Volume 1 for the N64... a cartridge you would be able to open up if you had the Shinobii Console Tool Kit.

We tested some little snap-on Wiimote attachments that looked like toy swords and tennis racquets last year and they were some of the worst peripherals ever because they actually blocked the infrared sensor. However, there's even one more drawback. read more...
