1up And EGM Switch To Letter Grades

Posted on Thursday, February 28 @ 23:03:23 Eastern by Duke_Ferris
A few weeks ago, Ziff Davis announced that all their publications would switch to using letter grades. 1up's conversions, at least, have left them with some very strange A+ choices.

As you know, GR has never given an A+ to a game. Even our A's are very rare. It's not that it's impossible to get an A+, it's just very, very difficult. There is a developer out there who can do it one day, we just know it.

However, 1up isn't so picky it seems. They've got a positive flood of A's and some odd ultimate winners. You cannot sort by grade yet with their new format, but browsing through some categories comes up with A+'s for:

Poker Smash, Virtua Fighter 5, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Orange Box, Halo 3, Bioshock, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, Gears of War, Kingdom Hearts 2, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Metal Gear Solid 3, NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, Project Gotham Racing 3, Bully, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, Guitar Hero, Resident Evil 4, SOCOM 3, Burnout Revenge, God of War, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, FIFA Soccer 2005, Need for Speed Underground 2, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal...

I'm not even halfway through the PS2 reviews...

Don't get me wrong, that's a list of some pretty good games, but are they really all an A+? Okami is better than half of those games (and "only" got an A).

Speaking of A's, perhaps even funnier are some of the embarrassing A's, because they've given out seemingly hundreds of them. King Kong, an A. Really? I bet the author doesn't regret that at all.

same here. GR's a bit pickier than I would be, but you know that when they say something's good, it is.

Agreed. The same goes for IGN and Gamespot, giving better grades to the games that have the most advertising space on their site. I'm still waiting for congress to get involved to find out if Gamespot lied about any of its reviews.

I don't trust any of them, like most of us here, but as the saying goes: if you're going to steal - steal from the best.

    In this case, that's GR.

Them using letter grades isn't going to change anything. They still suck at review scores.

Switch is spelled wrong on the main page. Personally, I love EGM. They're my favorite magazine of the major ones (I hate GamePro), and EGM reminds me of GR a little bit. Of course, if GR made a print mag then the game would be over. Anyway, I saw the grading on 1up and immediate thought of GR. Here's hoping you two merge and destroy half of Kansas.

I think they grade based on the 'special school' where everyone is a winner just for trying. That way, no one loses (except the customers.) Half those games sounded good, but the other half sounded like total crap.

Out of interest Duke, have any games come close to getting an A+? Apart from the one that got one accidentally.

Of all the reviews I read, I know that the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater came close, as did the first Driver and Gran Turismo.

I was browsing through the reviews to check up old grades and stumbled upon this: http://www.gamerevolution.com/review/hardware/promedia_gmxd Apparently the A+ has been given out years ago.

That was back when they reviewed hardware. I'm sure it was the same thing that happened recently. Good catch, though.

Ugh, I don't really like letter grades that much. A 0-10 scale feels a lot better when reviewing games, it was a huge relief when Nintendo Power switched over from their "Star" scale a year or two a go (yeah, I still read NP haha).

What game will get the first A+? My money's going to a hentai game. I thought the whole business of Ziff Davis switching to letters was sadly amusing. They touted the change as though it were this revolutionary idea that would forever change the face of reviewing. Whether you're handing out letters, numbers, or Mike'n'Ikes, you're still putting a value on a product.

It's GR's goal to never give an A+ either. That poor letter is probably gagged and locked up and being whipped by A all the time. "I think Patapon will get the first A+" I actually think McFarlane's Evil Prophecy 2 will get the A+.

"The Holy Grail of Gaming. The Perfect Game. We have never given one." That is the description, direct from GR. The only games that appear to be able to get one would either be Spore or Patapon.

I 100% agree with wild mario. If a game is "perfect" then its flaw is it cant improve on anything and it makes other games obsolete.

I'm with kitten on this one, both the games look awesome, but still the fact of actually getting an A+ is pretty unfeasible.

It was before GR existed, but i'd say the most amazing, revolutionary game for its time was probably either Pirates! or Dune II.

Hmm bets on the A+ game? Some money can be made here. As for the grading system methinks any works as long as it is consistent. The manifesto clearly states that IGN is not. GR has been, ergo, we, if not myself alone, consider GR to be of the highest and respected standards.

The thing about 1UP is that they don't think an A+/10/5 stars/whatever means "perfect" in the way GR does. They just think it means really awesome, so it's more like GR's A grade. I think you could probably get more GR-like review scores if you just bumped down all the grades by half a letter.

They do have some nice reviews though abit on the biased side. I for one hope GR stays the same as they have always been. I'm still waiting for the elusive A+ game you guys are holding out for. Waiting since 1999 guys. Keep it up!

an A+ is the equivalent of a 10, which EGM, not counting any other 1UP scores or magazines, have only given 14 times. in fact, out of the list that duke presented, only one of them (bioshock) was awarded an EGM platinum award (all 10's).

As a rule of thumb, i don't trust any review sites on the payroll of major producers... Been coming to GR since 1998 for game related mambo jumbo, and will be doing so until duke is forced at gunpoint to join EA's payroll...
