Alex Asks: Did Sony's PlayStation Meeting Sell You On The PS4?

Posted on Thursday, February 21 @ 17:00:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

What's up guys? Welcome to the first episode of "Alex Asks," a weekly video feature in which I pose to you a question related to a recent hot topic, and then answer it myself.

Now that the dust has settled and Sony's next-gen console is out in the open (well, sort of), I figured it'd be best to go with the PS4-centric question: Did Sony's PlayStation Meeting Sell You On The PS4? Please answer my query in the comments below, and be sure to check out my thoughts in the video above. If you'd like to continue the conversation on Twitter, you can reach me at @a_charlez.

PS - I know, I know... I totally forgot to talk about Gaikai! That said, a fully streamable back catalog of PlayStation games sounds incredibly promising. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out to be another one of Sony's empty promises...

It wasn't a bad presentation per se, but there really wasn't anything that caught my eye.

Same. Sony's first-party franchises just don't do it for me.

There's definitely a lot of potential, but I agree, there's still a lot that needs to be answered.

I'm super sold. I just buy every console anyway, but so far the ps4 seems to have similar features to the wii u but without making those big mistakes that Nintendo did. I'll be getting a ps4 day one just based on what I've seen at the launch event

That and the similar view on controller expansions, especially with how the Vita can do basically the exact same thing as the Wii U with playing while not using the TV. I know it's a bit of a downer since you have to own a Vita to do it but I already have one so it isn't a problem for me. And as far as not making the same mistakes Nintendo did, I refer to things like having a head-set jack in the controller, cross-game chat etc. Network features that should be no-brainers at this stage. Also, the tablet controller is a huge gimmick. It was an idea inspised by the iPad, and the iPad is the biggest gimmick in the history of everything, it is the definition of pointless. Sony are doing the right thing by incorporating something similar but not making it the main focus.

Gonna have to see more, it looks good but i am not sold at all. I also want to see the new Xbox. I do have a feeling its gonna be a tough choice on between the Nextbox or PS4. It was easy back for 360 vs PS3 since i was in highschool with a crap job and the 200 dollar difference made the choice easy.

I have to agree with you. I liked what I saw, but it didn't have me overly excited. That's mostly due to the lack of software up my alley. I'm really excited about Destiny, but that'll be coming to Xbox too.

Remember what happened with the first Killzone though guys. Sony showed off that video of Killzone that was just amazing and got everyone fired up about where console graphics were supposedly heading and then we all found out it was just a CGI movie of what they hoped the graphics may look like and ended up being nowhere near what people were expecting. Of course, you would think they would've learned their lesson the first time, so maybe this will be different.

Not sold at all, according to the specs it's a current gen PC, not too different from the one I own. There wasn't that wow factor I had from back in the PS2 era when I saw the first PS3 presentation with the technology blowing my mind and games having that "bran new" feel and having a sense of a huge leap forward and progression, this didn't feel like a brand new console, like something "next gen", it felt more like it a PS3 1/2 as opposed to a brand spanking new PS4, current gen with a few new features added in and some tech upgrades.

I have every console from the last 20 years excluding the Wii U. The PS4 announcement sold me, to a degree, on the console's future.

It did not sell me on making a purchase at, or anywhere near, launch.

I'm sure once we get price info, that will end up having a huge bearing on who's really willing to be early adopters. Above $399 and it will be a tough sell.

I'm sold based on graphics and playing games. All that extra crap with syncing with iPod iPad ifat is boring to me. I just want to put the game in and play, like what the guy said of how consoles used to just have one purpose and that's to play. This whole evolution thing with the console being able to do EVERYTHING is not something that sold me. What sold me was watching watch dogs and kill zone gameplay. :)

I don't like the incompatibility with PS3 games and controllers, so I think I'll just stick to my tactic since last decade: Wait for the Slim version at discount prices, buy that.

I am pretty much sold on owning a PS4 on launch day. I love new hardware and will be out day one purchasing one. What the PS4 has to offer is impressive (especially if it does end up being $400) and having owned every generation of Playstation with excellent results I see no reason not to have faith the system will flourish. That said my PC is still more powerful than the PS4 but there are going to be quite a few titles I know I'll want to play that are gonna only show up on it. The game that stood out the most was Deep Down, it looked great visually and reminded me very much of Dark Souls in many respects though more action based. To be fair honest I am playing Skyrim (once again) and that may have totally tainted me to be biased towards it. Sony may have dropped the ball on more than a few points (i.e. like Bras mention the controllers on being BC, PSN games not transfering to PS4, no HUGE titles at launch, etc.) but there is still time before/after launch to fix things.

I will probably buy it, but without more precise information on price and release date it's next to impossible to say it's a day one buy. Specially since some of the upcoming software for Wii U has a lot of appeal to me (namely, LOZ, SMT X FE and that Xeno-something game). I don't care too much for BC because I plan on keeping my PS3 for a while and I'm interested in the streaming service.

I might pick one up eventually, but it won't be at launch. I'm one of those that thinks it's still too early for a new round of consoles. I really don't think we would even be seeing the PS4 this early if Nintendo hadn't pulled the trigger early with Wii U. I use my PS3 more as a media server than a gaming machine, so I'm not terribly excited for a new version. The only games I have for it are are few exclusives, for multiplatform I usually go for PC these days. Not because my PC is more powerful than console (it is, but that's not the point), but because of the ridiculous deals I can get from direct download sites. Not to mention the additional content and changes I can get from mods. Until consoles can offer me both of those things, I'm not terribly excited about owning another one.

I owned the PS1 and PS2 but Sony lost me by the time PS3 came around and I've been strictly an Xbox/Nintendo owner since, and that's likely what I'll end up doing this generation as well. Nintendo has the first party titles and Microsoft does a better job in my opinion on all the hardcore games (1st and 3rd party) that gamers truly want than Sony does, leaving Sony in 3rd place again for me.

Like Alex said above too, Sony's first party stuff just doesn't excite me that much other than maybe Uncharted, but they can't compete with Microsoft (Gears, Halo, Fable, etc) or Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, Metroid). I'm still curious about this machine, but nothing more than that. Bring on the next Xbox!

The specs give it a strong potential of what the system can do down the road. I love the idea of one day being able to play everything from my PS1 games all the way to my PS4 games. Will I get one...YES....will I get one on launch date? NO. Still need to confirm price and what games are going to be available during launch. Too many questions are still up in the air for many people to make a decision like this. I'm in no hurry to be honest. I'll just sit back and wait for announcements to show up.
