Peace in the Era of Call of Duty

In a world dominated by violent media, Americans are no more eager to go to war than they were in the 1980s or the 1960s or the 1940s. Hasn't it always been someone else's problem? The overwhelming majority would rather go on thinking it had nothing to do with them and there...

Choose Your Own Video Game Adventure! Vol. 1

Posted on Friday, June 15 @ 17:30:00 Eastern by Bretimus_v2
About a month ago, community member Bretimus_v2 started a thread in the forums based on letting the rest of the community choose where the story was going to go. He ran two Choose Your Own Adventures, one centering on an original story, the other transporting another community member into the world of Metal Gear Solid.

I (danielrbischoff) cut my teeth with another story shortly after, but Brett and I wanted to challenge each other. We're going to be trading pages back and forth while giving you, the commenters, and you, the forum users, the opportunity to steer the story. Simply reply in the comments or in the forum thread where you'd like the story to go and we'll oblige.

Brett's been nice enough to write the first page, so read on and try to guess which games the pages at the bottom will take you to. We'll have the next page up on Monday, with new pages following every Wednesday, Friday, and Monday. Watch out for the dead ends!

Objective: Find a job to pay the rent.

Across the desk from Jack sat a small, stone-faced woman. With no idea why he’d been called to her office, Jack was unable to find even the smallest clue from her appearance. After a long pause she finally started talking. “This isn’t working out as planned. You’re good…but you don’t want to be here. My suggestion, find something you enjoy.”

And with that she stood, walked across the room and opened the door. Jack didn’t move. He was dumbstruck. He felt like time had stopped, and when it finally started it flew. The next thing he knew he was home. Snapping out of his stupor, he realized that he had been sitting at his computer mindlessly typing his resume. When he read what he had written he started to laugh. “Find something you enjoy,” he squawked, mimicking the woman’s words.

What appeared on the screen in front of him were his Gamerscore, Trophy Level, and a list of his speed runs. “I’m guessing that’s not what she had in mind,” he said to himself as he deleted the document. She was crazy. What he enjoyed was paying his rent and having somewhere to live. He needed something now. He needed a job and any job would do. But it could wait until tomorrow…he had some gaming to get to.

The bell chimed as he walked in the door to the staffing agency. The receptionist looked up and smiled. “Good morning,” she chirped, “my name is Rose and how can I help you?”

“Ummm, I’m looking for work. Anything really,” Jack responded.

“Well, we don’t just do anything. What we do is find the right job for you,” she said as she started pulling out paperwork. “I hope you set apart some time for all of this, it usually takes just over an hour.” And with that he was off. He filled out the paperwork, took some personality and ability tests on the computer and before he knew it, Rose had 3 jobs placed before him.

Talk about a mixed bag. He wanted to question their methods, but this was “what they do”, right?
