DAILY MANIFESTO

Don't Underestimate Call of Duty

Posted on Monday, November 7 @ 18:54:40 Eastern by

Without a doubt, there are a ton of new games on store shelves these days. It seems like every week ends and another week begins and even bigger games arrive on store shelves and post up even bigger sales numbers. Still, there will be one title that will crush figures and post billions of dollars of profits in its first week.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Everyone wants to see the juggernaut fail. Everyone wants to see everything come tumbling down on the leader of the pack. I'm sure there are more than a few of you visiting this website and reading these very words.

Still, MW3 will put up ridiculous numbers and sell through to millions of people in the first 24 hours and even more through the first week. Without a doubt, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will sell more than any other game imaginable.

Why?

Because it's the new Madden. There are gamers that only head out to buy one game every year. For years it was the latest football sim. Now it's Call of Duty. Believe me, there are gamers that don't even know about other options available to them. There are gamers who don't even really like games, but every single one of their friends is playing this one so they go out and drop the money they need to get a console and the latest Call of Duty game.

It's true. You and I may be "core" gamers, but we do not represent the vast majority of consumers buying video games. No, neither do those fanboys who are waiting in line at their respective game stores for the midnight launch of MW3.

The vast majority of consumers who will buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are the ones that will pick the game up after receiving their paycheck on Friday, the ones who need to buy an Xbox Live Gold Subscription card with their game, the ones who aren't getting the super-duper collector's edition.

Those people will drive sales numbers for Modern Warfare 3 and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PC at midnight tonight. Retailers everywhere will have their doors open at midnight. Let us know why you are or why you're not buying MW3 in the comments.

Why does it matter? When D- grade movie games are top sellers, there's an issue with the industry. But despite the fact that one game plays like more of an upgraded version of the previous than a true sequel, the CoD's since MW have been high quality games, and I don't see any issue with them selling well. Dark Souls, Skyrim...these games have enough of a core audience that the developers get by just fine. As long as that stays the same, it doesn't really matter what happens to CoD.

Exactly. People will hate on it for the same reason people purchase it, popularity. Really, I don't see any problem with it. They have put out a consistent product that pleases its fan base for years now, despite what the vocal minority would have you believe.

I haven't decided yet, on one hand, I -do- want to see more of Captain Price, and Soap, but on the other, I don't want to drop 60 (that I don't have due to Skyrim, SRW, and my addiction to tabletop RPGs) on a game I can beat on the same midnight release that I get it. Not cool, not cool at all. I don't enjoy Multiplayer so that isn't a factor for me, I don't enjoy it because I hate xbox live... I don't hate it because it sucks, I hate it because I don't like the people on it. If I could find a group on Xbox live I enjoyed, that were chill and polite (most of the time, trash talking is fine at times, I do it too) then I might enjoy CoD multiplayer more.... but at the moment, its a debate on whether I want to drop 60 for a fairly cool 3 hour campaign, or just continue to play my SRW and Skyrim when it comes out and save money that I don't have.

I'm in a similar boat. I grew tired of CoD multiplayer about 2 months after I had purchased Black Ops. It feels the same consistently, I've proven to myself that I can not only do good, but outright dominate on it. After playing Battlefield 3 for a few days, I know now where I'll be investing my multiplayer time. However, if you've played MW1 and MW2, you are invested in the story. I'll pick it up eventually, just to see how it wraps up (hopefully wraps up), but I doubt I'll be getting this at full cost.

This is basically my sentiment. My clan is a BF clan, so we'll be playing multiplayer on that, and frankly, I find that style of multiplayer more enjoyable anyways. I'll pick it up when it isn't so expensive for the single player, but then again, judging by how Black Ops still sells for release retail price at many places, and how MW2 did for a very long time after Black Ops was released, it's going to be a very long while before I get it.

I may try BF3 when I've got the cash, it sounds amazing for multiplayer. As for CoD, yeah I just can't do it for 60 bucks. I -want- to see more of the story, I mean, despite what critics would say, I find the story rather good. Not the best around, sure, but for an FPS that focuses on action its good. And hey, Daniel, there isn't anything wrong with casual gamers, or hardcore gamers. I go to midnight releases for games, even ones I'm not a huge fan of, because I'm... just a gamer. I play what I want to play, and that's it. I play a lot of obscure games, I play Japanese imports (mostly SRW... I love mecha), but I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer.... just... a gamer, I guess. Just like I love all kinds of music or movies. I think CoD speaks to whoever wants it to speak to them, and that we should all just play what we like.

I came to the conclusion that no CoD will ever have enough to make it worth a purchase after I beat MW1's single player in about four hours. Being annoyed I then beat it on the hardest difficulty in another eight hours. Then played multiplayer for two days and got bored and returned it three days early. Will I play MW3? Yes. I'll have it in my Xbox tomorrow after work through Gamefly. I'll beat it, get bored of the multiplayer and return it in time to hopefully get Skyrim. Don't get me wrong I'll have fun playing it, but as Dan said the game isn't made for me. It's made for the people that can only play a game for a half hour at a time and still never actually finish it. I am the 10%. Deal with it. We may shrink but we'll always be here to b***h about the s**t we don't like and then play it (and finish it) anyways.

I'm a proud owner of all the modern warfares, blackops and the original call of duty games (1 and 2 set in the 1940's). I enjoy a high-quality on-rails shooter, it's like a rollercoaster, it's thrilling and despite the length of the ride it's worth it to me. Your game gives you hundreds of hours of fun in the form of multiplayer (and co-op in the newer versions, whether that's through zombies or spec-ops modes). So if you dislike the content of the game, that's different to the game not providing enough in terms of quality and quantity.

P.S. I have Dark Souls at the moment, and that's a game I love -for very different reasons, I'd never compare the single player experience from these two games in different genre's, aimed at different people!

Oh and I'm getting it, I like CoDs style of multiplayer and i'm good at it, plus I like the campaigns and survival looks cool to. However, if you're not into the multiplayer there is no reason you should spend 60 bucks on this its only about a 6-7 hour campaign.

Unlike what a lot of people that visit this site are likely to say, I like CoD. It's a fun shooter with solid mechanics. I'm not that guy that goes out to buy each and every new version, but I own a couple of them, and I've spent my fair share of time fragging away. I'm not that guy that Prestiged the day Black Ops was released, hell, I've only Prestiged I think three times in almost a year on and off gameplay, I know people that did that the first week the game was out.

The point of all of that is that I'm a fan of the series, and I'm part of their target audience. But I won't be buying MW3 for one reason, Elite. The whole thing just screams to me nothing but sheer greed, and I'll have nothing to do with it.

Because I am in the vast minority here. I love the campaign. It's incredibly cinematic, great presentation, characters, and frantic firefights. It's also the only way to get the achievements. The multiplayer is a nice bonus.

I picked up MW3 at the midnight launch. I've played about an hour and a half of the single player campaign and so far I'm loving it. The story picks up right where MW2 left off in a firefight involving the Russians holding their own little "Occupy Wall Street" protest. You also get an update with Price and Soap right from the getgo, immediately after their encounter with Shepard.

I'm about six or so missions in, and so far MW3 has done some things (in the campaign perspective at least) that haven't been done in any other CoD game yet. I'm trying my best here to describe why I'm enjoying it without giving away any spoilers for people who would rather find out things for themselves (both story-wise, and gameplay-wise).

I'm dreading Friday morning, as I'll be torn between playing MW3 or Skyrim all day. The only reason I'm not playing MW3 right this very second is that I have to be up at 9 a.m. for an exam and I gotta get to bed.

    Lousy, worthless college...

Luke you are not alone, i ALSO want to know what happens to Soap, how the US will counter attack and if captain price will kick more A** then ever! People call it a great micheal bay flick, i say it's a great dramatic storyline and it's an insult to compare to the guy who made lameformers 1 2 and 3.

I love the incredibly cinematic Tom Clancy style stories as well. I get COD games once they hit $30 for the PC because of the story. So what if it is 3,4 or 7 hours long? Rollercoaster rides are brief as well but still a blast.

I was hoping the release of the new one would push down black-ops to $30 on Amazon, but it is still at $50....

I'm currently invested in BF3 right now, and don't see myself switching between 2 military shooters at the same time. I'll wait until MW3 goes on sale to pick it up. BF3 is taking priority since, well, it did come out first. Also, I'm way better at BF3 than I am at the COD games for some reason. Next game purchase is going to be Skyrim, so MW3 is a ways off for me pending a Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. price that I can't pass up. Don't understand all the COD hate I see on the internet, and am baffled by those who tell me I can't like it & BF3. Kind of reminds me of how many people hate on Family Guy, and tell me I can't like it and South Park. I think people just like to shun some things BECAUSE they are popular and for no other reason. Makes them feel cool or whatever, I don't know.

I did not buy just plainly because I do not like FPS or war type games. It is also not surprising at the number of copies this game sold; it's quite easy nowadays to keep making a game the masses will gobble up and this can be a good or a bad thing depending on the game.

Pretty much. He seems angry because they had their own idea of how to make money and didn't keep it to themselves. Totally rational. You know, because it is entirely CoD's fault that other companies decided to imitate it.

This doesn't even make sense... I'm not saying it's the best game ever, but you need to understand that imitation breeds innovation. It isn't bad when other people try to mimic another games success, because it just takes that one time that a clone does something different, and completely rewrites the genre again.

Im struggling to find the point in this article, so what if it sells more than any other game, so what if a company makes a huge profit, so what if people go and buy a console to play it, or play it because their friends are playing it, when did we all become so elitist that we frown upon people who only find the time to play video games for 30 mins a day or even a week.

I think what the guy was saying that games like Call of Duty appeal to people who just play nothing but that and only get a console just to play that and nothing else when video games have such a wide range of genre and appeal. There's nothing wrong with liking Call of Duty games, but people could at least try some new games.

I will probably buy the game eventually, but not for a while. Call of Duty has managed to do quite a few things right, atm I prefer Battlefield, but before MW2 my last fps I had been playing was Perfect Dark on N64 so I felt very out of the fps loop for a while. Call of Duty has a much lower learning curve and with the addition of the new point-streak system, they are finally doing something about balancing out strictly rewarding k/d. The co-op experience seems well done and vastly improved. My biggest gripe is Call of Duty Elite, and I truly hope the subscription option fails. I will boycott Elite.

While I own MWF, MWF2 and Black Ops, I have yet to finish any of those titles. Why? Too little time, too many other games in my library. Well, and Black Ops, like most Infinity Ward CoD titles, became rather boring rather quickly, at least for single player. That's reason enough for me to not purchase MW3...For now. I also don't have 60 bucks to drop on it right now and I don't have the time to invest in leveling up in multiplayer.

As far as other people playing it are concerned, it really does not matter to me one way or the other - The rude, obnoxious people on MW3 MP will also be on other games playing MP, being obnoxious. It's easy to label gamers who buy each MW3 game and only that as twitch action gamers with short attention spans but that's a little unfair, and perhaps stems a little from insecurities some hardcore gamers may have for feeling as though their past time still isn't widely accepted unless they're talking about WoW, CoD, Madden or some Wii game.

Either way, as long as the CoD sells out faster than Billy Corgan, it will garner media attention in a positive way and help keep the momentum gaming is seeing in terms of being considered a credible form of entertainment and, more importantly, art. And then no one will ever be insecure again*.

*In terms of the games they play. If you do in fact live in your grandma's basement and are a walking cliche...Well, your insecurities are founded.

This game is played by the majority of my friends, and it's a great way to have fun and keep in-touch with the friends that I don't see all the time (friends from University that now live in another City, etc). So I'd almost certainly buy any new incarnations of this game without hesitation, and provided my friends and I are happy with the quality of the game after purchasing it - we'd buy the next one, and the one after it.

I bought the game brand new, with a 2100 Microsoft Points card from Tesco (the british equivalent of bestbuy I guess?) for just £41.99 - that's $67.17 - So not only did I already want to buy the game, but it was offered to me at a bargain price. This must be too tempting for nearly anyone with a console to pass up?

Of course I'll play it. Just as soon as I finish arkham city, skyrim & get my fill of BF3. Of course mass effect 3 will almost land by then. This is the same situation I ended up with regarding MW2. So many other good titles landed so I kept putting it off. It will come down in price eventually and I am sure I will enjoy it.
