EA Artist, Soon To Be Laid Off, Burns EA Management

Posted on Tuesday, October 12 @ 19:02:31 Eastern by
An anonymous artist at Electronic Arts dishes the dirt on why Warhammer Online was a failure and who exactly in upper management is to blame. Oh, yes, let the flame-throwing begin!

On the VN boards for Warhammer Online, in a now suspiciously deleted post entitled "Why Warhammer Failed" (posted here and EALouse's Wordpress account in its entirety and unedited):

Hi everyone,

I would think myself to be part of some noble cause, like the original EA Spouse trying to save her husband from a hellish work environment at EA. That had a happy ending, however, with tons of publicity and a total change of overtime wages and salaries and how they are handled within the company. I do not expect a happy ending, so I’ll be personal and selfish, and this is just for me.

So just call me EA Louse.

I found out recently that I will be dismissed from Bioware Mythic during the next round of layoffs EA coming this November. I’m sick of seeing EA outsource their art and find every excuse to get rid of us and still not achieve anything. Mythic is dying, and its not us who killed him but we’re taking the fall.

But if you want to know what really went down with Warhammer, I’ll tell you right now.

First, the project leaders did not know what they were doing. Jeff Hickman was the saddest excuse for a producer I’ve seen. All he did was drink the Koolaid and suck up to the right people. He was the perfect yes-man, and this reached down to almost all managers.

My boss who will not be named, again and again would tell us that Rob Denton, one of the original owners, said we should “do this” and “do that” and we would say “omg it makes NO sense, please explain A, B, and C to him. “And then he’d come back and tell us, after we thought he had gone to talk with him,” No, Rob wants in this way. Jeff agrees, this is what we’re going to do. Understood? ” They never actually talked back to Rob. We didn’t talk back to them.

Rob said jump, our leaders said, “How high?! And on who?”

So we shut up and did what we were told, by people too afraid to tackle real problems. It is a culture of fear, especially since Mark Jacobs was fired.

Oh, he left voluntarily you say? No, he was fired, and everything placed on his shoulders by those closest to him so they could divide his salary and annual bonus. I bet Rob is enjoying that sweet new Maserati he bought after leaving the knife in his partner of 15 years.

Want to know more? Keep reading. I can keep ranting.

Rob was never there during the development of Warhammer. We always joked about when his next weekly holiday was coming. (Answer? Next week!) Mark was not available, was way too head down trying to design his own contributions or whatever. Rob always handled things. We were told NOT to speak with Mark in person, never, or else we would be explaining to Rob.

The coup began long before Warhammer, and Jacobs did not even realize it.

And yet, this is common gossip in the company, and nobody in this industry seems to get it. So get it! Rob was responsible for the entire project, then blamed Mark when things went wrong.

Ah, but could not do it alone. No, he needed Jeff Hickman, promoted from customer service to produce the Warhammer project. Wait, let me let you have that sink in. The man running customer service, on the theory that the management of a large team of CSRs qualified him to run a game development project, was put in charge of a $50 million project with no previous experience.

And he needed Eugene Evans, the man who brought you the almost non-existent marketing campaign behind Warhammer. We could not even believe how bad they fucked up the marketing campaign. There was almost none. We slaved for years, and this is how we were rewarded for it by Eugene and the people of EA? Being told that Warhammer was not “worth” a lot of money spent on it? LOL. Now he’s in charge of Bioware Mythic.

Oh yeah, and he needed Paul Barnett. You know him as the crazy British dude that appears in random videos at EA to promote his latest bullshittery. We know him as the crazy British dude who we have no idea of how he still has a job. This man was supposed to be the savior of Warhammer’s vision and design. Now all he can do is promote his strange ideas about his little secret project web Ultima game that’s been almost universally criticized by all of us and focus groups. What’s that? You didn”t know Paul loves one of those old Ultima games sooooo much he’s making a literal copy of it for Facebook? Well, the cats outta the bag. Too bad it sucks ass.

So what do they all have in common? All of them failed, badly, in Warhammer, and each of them is in a position of authority in the new company, while the rest of us are facing pink slips. How do they sleep at night? They spin aruond, blame everything on Mark, divide his old salary between them, and never speak about it again. Oh, and they fuck us little guys as well.

Almost makes me congratulate them for having the balls, but after watching them work, it’s obvious they don’t have any. They’re cowards running scared trying to hide under the wing of Bioware, now that Rob has become a general manager of EA.

And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that?

And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking , and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.

Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online. We all know it too ……

Anyway, back to Warhammer. We shouldn’t have released when we did, everyone knows it. The game wasn’t done, but EA gave us a deadline and threatened the leaders of Mythic with pink slips. We slipped so many times, it had to go out.

We sold mor ethan a million boxes, and only had 300k subs a month later. Going down every since. It’s “stable” now, but guess what? Even Dark Age and Ultima have more subs than we have. How great is that? Games almost a decade make more money than our biggest project.

So there it is. Rewarding the incompetent. Firing the competent.

I say it anonymously so I can keep my next few paychecks coming.

So I’m a louse. A big fat EA louse.

Want some more questions answered? Ask away.

Dude has serious sour grapes, but he also has a point. The incompetency of most higher ups like that is downright scary. Although I disagree with Bioware and EA's Old Republic MMO.....but thats for another day.

How very professional. He talks about his producers others but that's all I see here. Not that he isn't right about some of this, he could be, but it's pretty classless and hypocritical. Plus, you know a guy is full of **** when he's trying to trash a company as respected and consistent as Bioware, especially when it has to do with their MMO getting more favor than his.

    Have fun getting blacklisted, pal.

I agree with GanXingba, no matter how frustrated this person was it is still really unprofessional to vent like this. Plus most of this comes across as hearsay, I sincerely doubt that The Old Republic is going to flop. (I hope I don't regret saying this in a year)

Who gives a **** if it was unprofessional?
He's getting fired. He simply could not care any less about EA or looking professional now, and i don't blame him.

The only thing i would want to do is try to get one of the dickheads that cost me my job fired, which is what he's trying to do. Along with insult them for a while.

I was listening right up to the point where he said, "The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas." Sorry, but if Old Republic really is of subpar quality, George Lucas definitely does NOT know it. This is the man who is responsible for the last Indiana Jones movie and the Prequel Trilogy, including Jar Jar Binks.

Everybody has a breaking point. This dude reached his. I say it's okay for him to vent his frustration like this, much better than going Columbine on the place. Besides what's new? Many will agree that EA is a cancer to the gaming industry.

GanXingba and Deadpanwalking are just yes men corporate losers. EA and this culture of lies and greed will ruin the game industry. Never forget, this guy is RIGHT! Regardless if he is offering his opinion, their culture is toxic for gaming industries. Venture capitalists like EA, Gazillion, and Activision will ruin creativity and destroy the gaming industry. Bobby Kotick is a shining example of a piece of talking crap. He is bonoterd.

Wake up fans. Answer by not buying their product anylong (Sorry, COD, but this fanboy has walked away for good!)

EA management being reckless, ruthless and cutthroat? True.
    Politicking over quality? True.
Bad for the gaming industry? True.
Bioware turning out a sub-par product? Extremely doubtful.

Haha, I'm EA management? A "yes man corporate loser"? Way to keep it classy, guys. For the record, I'm a 22 year old college grad, so it would be pretty impressive if I were with EA management already, yeah? Been reading GR for about 7-8 years now, just never felt the need to comment before.

I'm not saying he's necessarily wrong about EA, I'm pretty sure I clarified that. I'm just saying its petty and unprofessional to lash out at his former employers like this and violate all sorts of confidentiality. It makes him no better than the people he's ranting against, and it will probably hurt his chances of getting another job because someone's gonna find out who he is.

And again, the random trashing of Bioware and the Old Republic alone is enough to make me scratch my head in wonder. What's the worst RPG they've made, Jade Empire? And that got a B+. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Whats with all the hate? Seriously guys if the man posted a forum post about how awesome EA was and how glad he was for working with them under Mythic, you guys would be calling fake and gay already.

But because this guy is totally obviously biased and making a ragerant, you're assuming its the gospel truth. You guys aren't being very logical. A man who just lost his job is hardly a trust-able source for the truth regarding the company.

As for the new accounts, this link has been put up on Digg and Reddit, and many of us have never been to the site before, having learned of it through said link. I can assure you that EA management has better things to do than entertain trolls.

Well having been laid off in the past, sometimes for unjust causes, I've never went on a rant like this.
This guy is as deprived of work ethics as those he critizises, period.
GanXingba is totally right, I'm HR and even if I'm not with EA, I'd never hire someone who did something like that to the extent that he did.
Furthermore, pissing as he did on all kinds of projects is a great show of disrespect for his former colleagues and team mates.

And as for the Old Republic flopping, I don't doubt it a bit. Just because Bioware has made plenty of great single player games, an MMO is a totally different beast. Everything I have seen about it thus far makes it sound like a single player game with a chat box. Space on rails? $300 million and the space game is basically Rebel Assault?
I know SWG has largely been a missed opportunity (because SOE's management of that game has failed at every level over the years) but KOTORO really sounds more like Star Trek Online than SWG.

Just wanted to say for those that didn't get deadpanwalking's humor. He was saying that Jar Jar Binks, last Indiana Jones film, and the Star Wars prequels were all really bad, but Lucas had no clue about it.

Hence George Lucas would have no idea that this game is bad because he doesn't know what good is and thought some really bad stuff was a great idea.

    Grrreetins,

Warhammer to me is hands down the best pvp fantasy mmo, they have addressed a huge number of the balance issues we used to suffer from and battle is pretty awesome. The more recent huge improvement of the city seige and scenario lineups really got mah attention of the possibilities and I'm hoping the big upcoming RvR changes with Skaven mercs, the upcoming new oRvR system, something about gyrocopters bombing keeps, too, etc. will continue to improve things.

I used to consider the mmo and real PvP mutually exclusive and couldn't imagine I'd still be playing Warhammer which has so much team PvP 2 years later but here I am going to battle whenever ah can :).

I think dwooid works for warhammer lol, Really? you have to post the improvements like a company desperate to gain followers again? Bottom Line is warhammer did in fact suck it trebek! I was a DAOC Lifer and was probably one of the biggest warhammer lackeys before it came out, EA in my opinion has ruined a quite lengthy title list and wether EA louse is real or not I feel class, fellow workers and confidentiality go out the window when a company decides to outsource work and not keep their own working. I think more people need BALLS like EA louse to stick up to companies pushing them around and possibly taking food from their families and a roof from over their heads. On the other side I will agree with him being classless and it being detrimental to fellow employees and confidentiality if in fact EA louse is a liar and got fired for being an oxygen thief.

Alas nope, been playing WAR fer 2 years since it came out of the gates with all those problems. I'm on Badlands and dwooiddwooid@gmail.com if you want to say hiyas. The RvR is pretty awesome now compared to release. Come to Badlands server if you want to see what a packed server with 2 years of upgrades/patches looks like. Next patches soon will have Skaven, huge oRvR changes, engie turret upgrade, maybe a built-in SoR, other stuff, so post patch probably good timing.
