Nice podcast. You guys almost made me want to get a Vita there for a second. ALMOST. I swore off handheld games forever several years ago and have no intention of going back. The problem I have with handhelds is that when I have time to play a videogame it's when I'm sitting around at home, so why would I want to spend my time on a handheld when I might as well be playing on a console or my PC. I'm not a little kid that needs something to play while riding in the car anymore.
I think the real reason the PS Vita is doing so poorly in Japan is not the continued popularity of the PSP so much as the popularity of the 3DS. The 3DS sold 5 times as many units as the Vita in Japan last week. It even sold more than the PS Vita, PSP, and PS3 combined.
I also wanted to add to what you guys were saying about how downloading games for the PS Vita doesn't really work when on 3GS: I read an article this week that argued that it doesn't make sense to download most games at all for the Vita since they eat up memory card space. It said that since the cheapest GB/$ rate is $3.13 per GB for a $100 32GB card, it would effectively add a cost of $10.95 extra to download a 3.5GB game like Uncharted.
Very good point, and really, if you're in the market for downloading games, you'd think you want to get it done while at home on a Wifi connection where it'll be completed in a reasonable time period.
LawnGnome’s assertion: “I'm not a little kid that needs something to play while riding in the car anymore.” Shows the North American attitude towards handheld video game consoles, that being they are only toys for kids. Even though Sony has always branded, advertised, and aimed at an older demographic with its handheld’s they still have this preconception to overcome. If Sony does not win over young adult males, like LawnGnome, the PS Vita will not take off in the US or Canada.
I think LawnGnome's issue is less that the Vita is a 'toy for kids' and more that he literally does not have a space in his life where he plays games on the go. I'm in the same position: The ONLY time I am ever free to play games is when I'm at home. I don't travel by any mass transit frequently, I don't stand in long lines at the anywhere, etc. So when I'm at home, do I want to play on my powerful console with my large HDTV, or a tiny device with a smaller screen, more uncomfortable inputs, and lower-production value software?
I honestly think both sides are true. There is a stigma, but I also know that I have to go out of my way to find times to play my 3DS, and now that time will be split with the Vita.
At this point, I would have a hard time justifying the purchase of a Vita. I think it looks awesome as hell...I just don't get down for handheld gaming as much as when I was younger.
Sometimes we found some useful information without any wastage of time, in that case we should thankful to the person who shared that information, only few person are lucky to have such type of information.
