Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Gamescom Dead Space 2 Trailer... Wow.

Posted on Wednesday, August 18 @ 15:30:08 Eastern by
There's a new Dead Space 2 Trailer out in honor of Gamescom, and I gotta say, Holy Crap!

It might seem stupid of me, but I've never played Dead Space (the first).  I know, I know.  I'm not a real gamer.  How did I land myself in the GR offices without having played Dead Space.  What am I?  Some kind of non-game-playing-person?

Honestly, I'm a total wuss when it comes to horror games, and my impression is that Dead Space did that job to the fullest of its ability.  Kind of turned me off from the title.  Since then, I've been trying to expand my normal game-playing palette in favor of genres I wouldn't normally even touch.  It helps that getting review assignments has already given me a taste of what it's like to play games I don't even want to play.  Reviewing games has also given me a greater grasp of what I think is a great game and what everyone should think is an awesome game.  This doesn't always apply, but like I said, this is just something I'm trying.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about: I would never have given Alan Wake a second look. It just wouldn't have been my cup of tea. I bought the game on the cheap, played through the story, and found some mechanics I really enjoyed. I also didn't mind the general glaze of dread and anxiety in the game. I really enjoyed the combat mechanics and the story.

Another example of why I'm pretty interested in Dead Space now that the second title is coming out is that I can't stand to play sequels to games where the story line actually matters. I was really excited for Mass Effect 2, but couldn't just pick up the sequel without playing through the original.

What does GR think of the trailer above? How stupid am I for not playing Dead Space when it came out? How smart am I for going back to it before playing the second game?

Horror based video games are lame. I can't SEE anything. That's not scary, that's just bothersome. If I wanted to not see things, I'd play Fallout with my eyes closed or something.

I'm with Odbarc on the darkness thing. The two things I have most in video games are always having to use a flashlight, and swimming levels in first person shooters.

Dead Space wasn't even that scary.

Dead Space isn't as scary as it is suspenseful. There's more of a pure want to not die than actual fear of what you're fighting.

Also, Isaac is probably the ballsiest guy in video gaming I know.

@Reign: Yes, God of War , still looks cool. I like sequences that really change the normal gameplay, no matter what the title is.
