GDC Day 0: MMO of the Day: Mytheon

Posted on Monday, March 8 @ 20:03:38 Eastern by Blake_Morse

GDC10 kicks off this week and before the convention even officially starts we're already up to our ears in meetings. Nick and I met up with some Aussie developers and got to see a lovely rainbow that just happened to end right at the Moscone Center, where GDC just happens to be held.Is the Game Developers Conference a pot of gold? Maybe to some. Me included, since I am getting paid to cover the event.

But I digress.

As part of this year's coverage, I'll be looking at a ton of MMOs that will be hitting the market later this year starting today with Mytheon. Set in the magic land of Argos, it is up to you as either a Warcaster (fighter), Elemtalist (mage), or Eidolon (support magician) to take on the Gods of the old world who have turned against mortals such as yourself.

What I found interesting about this ancient Greek, Clash of the Titans-esque game is just how eclectic it is in its gameplay style. It's as if Diablo and Magic: The Gathering went out for drinks one night, both had one too many and nine months later this little bundle of joy tore through its womb to breath new life.

While the controls function similarly to those found in games like Torchwood Torchlight and Titan Quest, the combat does not. Okay, there's still the whole point-click-murder thing, but you also get a deck of stones that function much like a deck in a CCG. Stones randomly come up in your inventory and contain actions such as spawning a minion, casting a spell or erecting a tower. Spend some mana, cast your spells and whoop some ass. The minions you spawn will have their own basic set of AI and, much like in Command and Conquer, can be controlled as individual units for an extra depth of strategy. It should be noted that they'll disappear after a couple of minutes and new units will have to be spawned, much like an untap phase.

Mytheon is looking to run off the popular free-to-play model but will also include subscription options for those who want a little more of an edge. It will support 2-8 player PvP and up to 4 player PvE. It's still deep in its beta phase, so you may have a bit of a wait before you get to play it. Unless you happen to check the Manifesto this Friday...

Yep, he means Torchlight, since a Torchwood game would be far too awesome.
