GDC Day 1: MMO of the Day: Not an MMO at all

Posted on Wednesday, March 10 @ 00:28:05 Eastern by Blake_Morse

Okay, so I know I promised an MMO a day for you here, but you see, part of the wonderful fun and splendor of GDC is how PR companies play musical chairs with your scheduling. Meaning the MMO I was going to talk about today got moved to another day and time. Which in turn means a double dose of them at some point this week. I did see Civilization V...but I can' talk about it tomorrow and my time spent checking out Limbo and True Crime will be better spent on a couple full on previews. But have no fear! I did actually see one thing that I can about. An honest to goodness actual guitar controller for the 360.

It's for a game coming out later this year called Power Gig: Rise of the Sixstring and it's compatible with all the other rhythm games out there. The major difference obviously being that you can clip down the installed string dampener, plug it into an amp, and shred out some Van Halen licks once you're done playing the game.

Nick and I spent some time checking out the game and futzing with the controller earlier today and the quality seems on par with your lower-priced retail instruments. I'm sure that even they would agree that these aren't custom Les Pauls that we're talking about here, but considering the price point for a game bundle (guitar, drums, mic, game) is going to be competitive with the current generation of Rock Bands and Guitar Heroes, that makes for quite a deal. So maybe you accidentally turn on the PS3 or 360 while trying to impress a chick with your ability to play “Stairway”, it's still a hell of a lot cooler than plastic guitar shaped toy with some buttons on it.

Stay tuned for more info on the game and it's unique control scheme.

so the controller is an electric guitar, why not made a adapter for current electric guilars to interface with the game also? that'd be cool too, and actually attracts people who already owns a guitar

    also...................first, MUHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Hmm. This reminds of Tony Hawk: Ride, something tells me this might not go well.
Also I have a cheap guitar called an iAxe Guitar, it's pretty sweet for beginners like me to be able to have amp and effects on your computer. The problem is, they have cheap strings that were not lasting, and you have to get a 1/4 headphone.

Rochester: I don't know if I can agree that this is going to be the same as TH Ride. The big difference here, is that Ride in no way could possibly teach you how to ride a skateboard in real life. Not even close, it was closer to an arcade skateboarding game (only bad). This, if it is done correctly, coudl legitimately teach a person how to play the guitar, by turning electronic lessons into a video game. I have been waiting for this genre to come out for years. I was a big fan of the old arcade games for DDR and Beatmania etc. They had one called Keyboard mania. It was an honest to god piano keyboard, that you played on the game. You could really learn to play the keyboard using this game. If this lets you learn how to play the guitar for real. It's going to be popular. Not just amongst gamers who like rock band, but amogst people who actually want to learn how to play the guitar without paying someone to teach them, and having it be made a game of it.

    ...

On the other hand, if this is just the same as Guitar Hero et al. and the only difference is that it has a guitar controller that looks more like a guitar than normal... it's going to be lame.
