GDC Day 2 MMO of the Day: Web Lords
Posted on Wednesday, March 10 @ 16:30:58 Eastern by Blake_Morse

Whoo boy! I'm still in recovery mode from last night's True Crime party at the illustrious W Hotel. All I'm gonna say is this: Asian pole dancers and free booze are a potent combination. But not even a hangover was going to stop me from checking out Kick-Ass this morning or the super secret game from a certain company whose name rhymes with, “gablesta” that I can't talk about until Monday or taking a moment to scope out what would be today's MMO of the day: Web Lords. Essentially what you have here is a game that runs in a banner above your browser that allows you to enter and exit into play as you please.

Now, this is not your average MMORPG, it's more about strategy than anything else. If you've played Foursquare on your phone or computer than the concept should seem familiar. You build your avatar, pimp them out with some sweet gear and get to building yourself a sweet army of elves, ogres and dragons. The way you do that? Go to various websites and claim them as your own, mine them for materials and use those to builds your minions. You take care of all the set-up, such as placing your troops and customizing your gear, but the fights themselves are all automated after the set-up so it's all about being a better tactician than being able to send more elves to their doom than your opponents.

You gain experience by attacking sites for control or defending ones that you already have claim to. And since it's all about encouraging play, even if you loose the battle, everyone's a winner. Loot and experience all around and maybe even a shiny new toy for all your effort no matter what the outcome of the game..

But you can't just go around claiming every lonely soccer mom's blog about her cat and expect to find a lot to mine. The more popular the site, the more points it's worth. So while cathyloveshercats.com may only warrant you 10 points, if you make a site like google your bitch, you'll be rolling in the magic crystals. But don't forget to leave a decent defense behind when you log off or some intuitive player is going to take away your honey pot.

If you enjoy casual MMOs like Evony or like to play things like UniWar on your iPhone then you'll probably get a kick out of Web Lords. The game is currently in Beta but will be available for PC and iPhone at launch, which should be later this summer. Stay tuned for more MMO goodness tomorrow. For now, I'm off to go get my drink on with the Canadian Ministry of Culture. Boosh!
