GOTY Edition Dead Island Infecting The Summer Months [Update]

Posted on Tuesday, May 22 @ 09:00:32 Eastern by
[Update] Stop the presses. Hold the phone. Turns out, I have posted a "factual inaccuracy" here about Dead Island...and it actually DID earn a single, solitary Game of the Year award from GameCritics.com (not to be confused with the Game Critics Awards) as Deep Silver PR has pointed out to me. That totally makes this Game of the Year edition legit, right? Because one person/site saying it was Game of the Year certainly means it is, to everyone.

[Original] Okay, so I got a press release this morning. It was Deep Silver telling me that a Dead Island Game of the Year Edition is arriving this Summer. Normal stuff, right? Except Dead Island wasn't near the Game of the Year category...anywhere!

I've come to expect that most of the bigger releases around the holiday season tend to relaunch the following year with a Game of the Year edition. But they've got some big balls to say that Dead Island was the Game of the Year, in anybody's mind.

The game was...how you say? Mediocre. Broken. But I guess Game of the Year Edition sounds a lot better than Dead Island Game—that was okay but needed to be patched a ton of times to work right, but we promise it works now, we swear it does, oh and there's DLC added too, please buy this—Edition. I went ahead and made the box art for them:

as much as I agree that the game lacked severe polish, and had ridiculous spawn/gameplay mechanics, to be honest I still enjoyed it more than other games with polish and multi million dollar advertising campaign (****ing look at you COD)

It was a nice attempt to venture beyond the traditional gameplay style, and while not perfect, I tend to enjoy innovation over perfected repetition

So did I. We gave it a B-, so it had to have some good qualities. But you don't often see a GOTY edition with as many negatives as Dead Island has.

Well, to re-release it they had to call it something and I bet you their marketing department wouldn't have greenlighted "Dead Island - This Time We Get it Right Edition".

More than anything I think this calls into question the integrity of the reviewer and the website that gave this game GOTY. Games are subjective but there were so many better games.... Like sooooo many...

Wow, did people really have that many problems with the game. I played the whole game with a friend and had little problems. The game was polished enough for me, i really had no glitches other than a few weapons dissapearing when i threw them, and that was rare and minor. I never really had any technical issues either, and only 1 time did i get a really bad spawn, and that was on the last level where it spawned my friend and i so far apart, made it really difficult.

I had a blast with the game, and it was a really fun interesting zombie game, that felt different than any other Zombie game, and really fun in co-op. I think it turned out well and was a pretty awesome game. That being said, it doesnt really need a GOTY or Special Edition, Ryder White and the Arena is all they could add, and IMO thats not enough to justify it.

    Dead Island - Mulligan
    Dead Island - QA Remix
Dead Island - Ok This Time for Realsies, no Faksies
Dead Island - We were Drunk Last Time

See anyone can up with a better title than GOTY Edition.
