GR Mailbag: Union of Soviet Socialist Tamriels

Union of Soviet Socialist Tamriels

From: "bill stellin" <*************@yahoo.com>
Subject: Skyrim review

As you probably know by the now, the PS3 version of Skyrim is under severe scrutiny by the public. Thousands of reports of frame rate issues, freezing, crashes, game breaking bugs, etc have begun to be reported by the PS3 consumer base. As an avid supporter of Play Station, I am question why you have posted positive reviews for the PS3 version of this game, when the company has shipped a severly unfinished product? Please take the time to either remove your review, or actually play the game for 75+ hours so that you may experience these issues first hand. Your review as it stands now, is inaccurate, and misleading.
Thank you for your support in this matter.

Mr. Stellin,

I am an American. I will not let you push me around. The USSR is dead and shall remain so as long as my country stands. You'd better not be Putin me on.

From: "Mike Bona" <*************@gmail.com>
Subject: PS3 Skyrim Review - Metacritic

Dear Daniel,

I'm writing you to request that your review of the PS3 version of Skyrim be removed or ammended to reflect the game-crippling lag that most gamers are experiencing. The Playstation Lifestyle Metacritic Score is currently 100 which can be perceived as deceitful at its current state.

As a side note, Skyrim fans that play on a PS3 (such as myself) are hoping that things like this bring more and more attention to the issue and motivate Bethesda to correct it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mike

Hi Mike Bona,

I can't believe I wasted the whole making-fun-of-the-sender's-name gag on the previous e-mail. Your last name lends itself far too easily to comedy.

To answer your request: No, I will not. You and everyone else on Metacritic are stupid and you should stop reading that site and start reading other better sites like this one because it's got reviews and most of the readers aren't stupid like you and your friend Joseph Stalin who will not get what he wants because 'merica.

It's Amuricuh not 'merica, and I think it's more Sony's fault than Bethesda's for making a console so hard to port to.

Step 4: Realize this costs much more money/time.
    Step 5: Develop for PC/Xbox.
Step 6: Sell 2-3 times as many units on those platforms.
Step 7: Release crappy PS3 version.

Is this a post on Daniel trying to plug himself and show him as clever? If this is so, then it fails quite fantastically. First the email-ers raise quite valid points. As a PS3 owner that bought and plays Skyrim, I can attest that the game has serious freezing issues. At one point after a freeze and reset, my PS3 informed me that a backup was required because the data was corrupted. That scared/scarred me. Secondly, Daniel's attempt at plugging himself, and his ability to sit at a computer for an uncertain amount of time to think of a reply, should also be questioned just like the Skyrim review.
Lastly, signing "GR" as the sender of the reply email brings everyone and thing down at GR. If you are willing to insult your fan base, then sign your own name.

And, in regards to the PS3 Skyrim issues. They do raise valid points but as a reviewer I didn't experience them to such a severity that it impeded or even affected my gameplay experience.

Yes, those were real e-mails and I really sent those replies. They both got very upset with me, but I talked them down and learned that both of these individuals have spent more than 100 hours each on the supposedly "so broken your review can't possibly count" PS3 version of Skyrim.

I must say although your replies were funny I actually found them to be pretty mean. I mean they were friendly emails about legitimate problems with the game and you actually called the one guy stupid and made fun of their last names. But i understand I really have no right to critique how others do their jobs so I'll just leave it at that, just thought I would give my 2 cents for what it's worth

We appended a warning to the review in question long before these two issued their e-mails. That's why I move forward with calling them out. Neither of them actually read the review. Neither of them bothered to look farther than the byline. There, sitting atop the review is a detailed explanation of the severity of some reported bugs, but they immediately click on my name and send me these e-mails.

Either way, I followed up with much friendlier responses, if it helps.

Basically they're both Metacritic users who managed to forego even the smallest modicum of reading required by the International Board of Internet Licensing. Oh wait, there's no such board and that's why we're even reading these e-mails in the first place.

I think you should have taken those guys points onboard and maybe bolted on a warning to PS3 users.

I was at my friends house yesterday, we played a little MW3 splitscreen together on his PS3, i've got a 360 and a PC and i found this version of the game to be almost identical, and the pad took no getting used to. They he asked me for help with a quest in skyrim...

    OH... MY... GOD...

I have a £1000 rig at home with an i7 quad-core processor, 16gb of DDR3ram, an ASUS Oc'd GTX570 13xxmb PCix16 card and i've also played the xbox version and trying to play the PS3 version was just plain upsetting... it was running around around 10-20fps in a dungeon, and this was only 8hrs into his game. My PC obviously runs the game in max everything at 60fps minimum, and the xbox plays at atleast television standard 29fps in crowded environments... the PS3 version has got serious problems.

Geez, what's the problem people? This is what the mailbag has historically been about, making fun of those who pose a question, regardless of how valid it might be. This is GR, this is not the UN or WHO, lighten up.
