Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
Posted on Thursday, September 9 @ 17:31:06 Eastern by KevinS
9/9/99 was one of the most successful console launches in history: The Dreamcast.
The little white box that claimed "it's thinking" sold like crazy, complete with a gorgeous and fast Sonic Adventure at the helm. And yet, the little system that brought us the major innovation of the first REAL online console multiplayer fell by the wayside due to the hype - just the hype - of the Playstation 2.
This little piece isn't meant to be a history lesson or an accusatory finger-wag at PS2 fanboys, but just a simple nod of the head to one of the most influential consoles to date. Online play, connecting to a portable (before the PSP and PS3 connected, even before the GBA could join forces with the Gamecube, the NeoGeo Pocket Color and the DC could work together) and a serious jump in graphical ability from the PSOne/N64 era, it only lasted two years on the US market before everything hit the clearance bin.
Rest in peace, my virtual friends. And thank you.
