Help Me Open My Super Nintendo

Posted on Saturday, January 14 @ 14:00:00 Eastern by

Armed with Christmas gift cards I went out on a search for a Super Nintendo. I found one! Pretty simple!

What games should I buy now? How do I get rid of the yellowing? B button or A button? Let me know in the comments.

Secret of mana! Breath of fire 2, Chrono trigger, super mario world, donkey kong, super punch-out...

WAIT! all these games got ported to the new consoles somehow. Get a game uniquely made for the Snes and that got no sequels, follow-ups or remakes made yet. Like Secret of Evermore, Soul blazer or actraiser 1 and 2!

You can't really get rid of the yellowing as far as I am aware. It's a result of putting your SNES in direct (or sometimes indirect) sunlight. The plastic itself has changed colour, so unless you want to just paint over it, you're stuck with it.

Games to get: Many games have been either remade or re-released in some, easier to acquire format. I will assume you know that, and assume you got an SNES to COLLECT old school games, not just to play the games. As someone who ALSO collects SNES games, I'll go look in my closet and list a few games I have...

    Top List:
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III. Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Breath of Fire 2, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, Star Fox (It's hard!). Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 (They are all good).

Those are the Top games to get. Most of the RPGs will be hard to find, or just expensive. Here's some games that made my personal collection, but may not be on everyone's list.

    Secondary List:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Rock 'n' Roll Racing, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Super Scope 6 (The SIX Stands for how many AA Batteries you need!) Mario Paint.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but someone else will mention it I'm sure.

Lastly, if you're a big fan of Secret of Mana like I am, and you have 2 other people who will play it with you, you'll want to buy THREE controllers and a Multitap. If that's not really going to happen, at least own two controllers. Many of those games are great for 2 people.

Actraiser, Axelay, both Castlevanias, Chrono Trigger, Demon's Crest, FFIII, Final Fight, Hook, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Marvel War of the Gems, the Megamans, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Sparkster, Super Adventure Island II, Super Double Dragon, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, Super Mario World, Super Punchout, The Peacekeepers, UN Squadron, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse. Dude, I could go on and on... I'm warning you, you might not even touch your fancy 360 and PS3 for a long time if you get into all these games.

UN Squadron... man that was a great shoot'em up. If only it has two players on the SNES.

I would have to say Mega Man X, X2 and X3. The first one is available on Wii's Virtual Console and the PSP remake. Aside from the PS2 Mega Man X Collection, I don't think they have ported the rest of the series anywhere.

I remember liking Clay Fighter, but I was really young then, so I might be wrong on its "quality."

A.) How much did you pay for it?
B.) Do you know about emulation?
C.) Major titles like Super Mario, Yoshi's Island, etc. aside; I have many fond memories of Gemfire.

I paid $40 for the package and $8 for the copy of Killer Instinct. Yeah I know about emulation but I have this thing about wanting to play classic games on classic hardware.

This may be sad, but I remember renting both Jurassic Park and Home Alone 2. The Home Alone cartridge was effed up and I ended up with infinite health, so I beat the game!

Illusion of Gaia was a great game, if you can find a copy of that.

Illusion of Gaia has a special place in my heart because it was my first Action-RPG. I must've rented (and beaten) that game from the local movie rental place at least 10 times. You'd think I would have just bought a copy.

You know, I actually own a copy of it. It's sitting in my closet, and I have never played it. I found it at a Garage sale for 5 bucks and bought it on a whim, only turned it on long enough to know it works, and forgot about it. I'm getting the impression you think I should play it?

Play it! It's one of the oft forgotten gems of the era. I think it uses battery back-up for the saves though, hopefully it still works.

The Soul Blazer series (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma) is great and extremely underappreciated. I'm not sure Terranigma came out outside of Europe, though.

As for other great underappreciated games, try:

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, an incredibly bizarre RTS/jRPG hybrid that, despite playing like virtually nothing else, is is an extremely deep and polished game. Its first sequel virtually created the tactical RPG genre as we know it, and has recently received an incredible PSP remake that may have been my GOTY for last year.

Tiny Toon Adventures, which is actually a seriously fantastic platformer.

Shadowrun, which took the very cool world of the tabletop game and put it into an action heavy adventure game with a compelling plot and strong film noir influences.

Demon's Crest, the final installment in the Gargoyle's Quest series, and a wonderfully well designed platformer with surprising depth.

Lots of great suggestions on here, surprised nobody has mentioned the Lufia series.

Breath of Fire 1 & 2, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore (a good square RPG that I often find overlooked), Illusion of Gaia, Actraiser 1 and 2, Contra 3, Mario All Stars, Kirby Super Star, Yoshi's Island, Tetris Attack, Any castlevania, any strike (desert strike, etc). I could go on. SNES was the mecca of RPG's, so a lot of the RPG's are phenomenal and a good buy.

Oh yeah. if you have an N64/Gamecube/Wii AV cables you could use those instead of the RF cable that came with the SNES. You should also get Super Bomberman 2. It's seriously fun with 4 people.
