LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

If Doom Was Made Today... And It Sucked

Posted on Thursday, December 8 @ 15:12:47 Eastern by
YouTube user Chubzdoomer recreated Doom's E1M1's Hangar level with features from first-person shooters, like cut-scenes, regenerating health, and linear level design, to make a point: "This is meant to make a statement about games today rather than be an enjoyable level."

Enjoy all of the unnecessary messages, long-ass dialogue, and pointless jumping.

What did this prove, again? It just sounds like yet another elitist jerk trying to make yet another pointless statement that's seeped in nostalgia and biased opinions. Really? Can we quit with the anti-COD stuff? It's gotten to the point where I'm Anti-Anti-COD because I'm tired of the *****ing and moaning. Can't we just ****ing play what we want when we want without someone telling us what we're supposed to be enjoying? I guess we aren't allowed to enjoy modern games. You stick to your Amiga, C64, and Atari, I'll be enjoying my Xbox 360. Whatever makes you happy, but quit trying to tell me what to play or that this game sucks and it sucks because YOU think it sucks, or that modern gaming sucks because YOU think it sucks. I hate people who make pointless videos about meaningless statements.

I was gonna make a comment on how the protagonist still think the Russians are behind this... But necrowolf's whinny 5 years old rant made me loled so much harder then the video! Take a shot whenever he makes questions marks, swears and uses the word "suck".

Yeah I kind of went on a tirade there, I deserve the mockery. I've had a bad day. I really could have just said, "Yeah we get it, COD is linear and you don't like it." and left it at that. But nope, once more I make a douche out of myself in public.

I don't have an extensive vocabulary, obviously. You lot should be happy to know that my girlfriend is mocking me as well, except I don't have the luxury of just closing Firefox to ignore it. Anyway, my Xbox 360 red-ringed on me today, right as I was playing Batman: AC so there's that, and that "sucks." I did find out my warranty is over, and they stopped covering this issue for free, so it looks like I'm not playing Batman, or Skyrim anytime soon.

As with anything else that gains rampant popularity, there are bound to be haters. Call Of Duty, love it or hate it, sells millions. It's doing something right, even if it's just giving more and more of the same each year with added tweaks and changes to the same formula. Clearly people want more of it, because they keep buying it and playing it. Look at the Xbox Live charts, the series is in the top spot, if not number one week after week.

For the record, I'm more of a Battlefield kind of guy. Also Dark Souls.

I agree that people should play what they like, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't express what they don't like in a game. It's not a "you should play this game" statement the video is making, but a rather "I would like developers to stop adding things like this" statement. Sure some people might like the way modern FPS' are, but there are a lot of people that don't.

Doom was great and all, one of the first FPS I ever got my hands on. But face it, a little more linearity would not have killed that game. Plenty of time was spent walking back and forth through the same areas, searching for some minor little detail that was missed that was preventing you from moving forward.

The bit about the DLC and quicktime events were spot on though. That video did a better job of showing what you'll see in the Battlefield 3 single player campaign opposed to the MW3 campaign though.

Dude, same here. I don't care though, I'll beat the game again even though I'd barf at the end.

It's the mild bounce of moving, at least for me. That rocking up and down, slightly side to side gets to me after a while. Funny thing is I never noticed or had a problem until after playing that cheap Chex Quest knockoff.

Every floor of every level was like walking on trampolines.

The problem is one of design and spectacle over the years. Doom was as simple a premise as one could get, and there was no need to hold up the pacing of the game for the sake of telling any type of story, you could run 80mph and had a gun. Fast forward to games like System Shock 2, Deus Ex, or Goldeneye which were adept at gently tugging you toward a plot point or event, but if you were too slow or wandered off you might miss it; the story simply continued anyway.

As has probably been mentioned numerous times: games like Battlefield or Call of Duty try to have a storyline, but lead you around by the nose because this scripted event is IMPORTANT DAMMIT, TAKE A LOOK AT EXPLOSION. IT IS A PLOT EXPLOSION AND IMPORTANT. *ahem*. Point being, this video is heavy handed but so is modern storytelling. There's a reason you remember the little things like secrets in games like Doom or Duke 3D, but only the setpieces and multiplayer from BF and MW.

Holy hell that's a longer comment than I anticipated.

tl;dr Gaming has evolved, storytelling and pacing have regressed to handholding levels.

I'm sorry but have you ever gone back to play Goldeneye or Doom? We like to think, "Yeah, those games were the peak of FPS and now all we have is CoD!" In reality, it's more like, "This was fun at the time, but really, it's a relic of its time." We pine for what once was, but I'll stick to my Battlefield, CoD, and Rainbow Six thank you.

maybe a TPS nomination? Is that wrong of me to ask? I'll take that or a hug from Nick Tan. Never did get that. I did ask for one once.
